#EuropeVSNHL: Why compare European countries with the hockey regions of the USA and Canada? In previous posts, I compared Sweden, Finland, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, and Germany with the US states and Canadian provinces with NHL teams. The result surprised many - I showed that these countries would be market leaders if they played in the NHL. Next, I rated Hockey Slovakia and Austria, which could be comparable to the NHL regions in terms of potential, but they need to catch up. Another country from the top 10 in Europe is France, which, by all indicators, should be in the lead, and I point out the problems that need to be overcome to regain leadership. #FranceVSIllinois Take-home pay $: <12,000,000 vs 43,262,500 Population million: 67.97 vs 12.58 GDP 2024 Billions $: 2779 vs 820 Largest arena: 15,000 vs 19,717 France is a country with a hundred-year-old hockey tradition that is the envy of many states in the NHL. And here's why: Paris is where the first hockey game in Europe was played on December 3, 1894. On February 20, 1896, the first European hockey club was created in France - Club des Patineurs de Paris. The French Ligue #Magnus is the oldest active hockey league in the world - it was created in 1906. France is the country where the first international hockey organisation was created in 1908 - the Ligue Internationale de Hockey sur Glace - International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). The French team won the European Hockey Championship in 1924 and, in 1923, took second place. At the club level, the highest achievement of French hockey is the ACBB Paris team winning three Spengler Cup Davos in a row from 1959 to 1961. At the same time, over the next 50 years, hockey's popularity has declined in France, and now it is inferior to sports such as football (soccer), basketball, rugby union handball, cycling and motorsports. At the same time, in cities such as Rouen, where the winners of the 2012 and 2016 #IIHF #ContinentalCup (European Tier 2 tournament) ROUEN HOCKEY ELITE 76 are based, hockey is in a leading position. I was lucky to visit Rouen for the 2021 Champions Hockey League and chat with the management. According to the information received from the primary source, the club's income net is at the level of some teams in the European top 8 countries. At the same time, the total income net of Ligue Magnus in the 2023/24 season was less than $12,000,000. For comparison, the income net of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2009/2010 season, when the team won its first trophy in half a century, was slightly more than twice as much – $28,328,627. The last team to win the #StanleyCup with an income net of less than $12 million was the Colorado Avalanche in 1995. The last time a team with an income net of this level played in the NHL was in the 2010/11 season. Thus, the real lag between France and the growth of investment in hockey in Illinois remains at 14-15 years. At the same time, Illinois lost to France in terms of GDP and population.

New Post: Team USA Olympics snubs: Jalen Brunson, Kawhi Leonard miss out, though one roster spot is reportedly open - https://lnkd.in/ewsjY-3G Technically speaking, Team USA hasn't finalized its roster for the 2024 Olympics. Yes, multiple outlets have now reported that USA Basketball has settled on 11 players to bring to Paris, but remember, Olympic rosters go 12-deep. There is still one roster spot on the table. Should injuries in the NBA playoffs knock any of the 11 chosen players out, more spots could follow.Still, the selection process for the top 11 was a tad unorthodox. USA Basketball didn't settle on a roster until June 28 for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. The NBA playoffs haven't even started yet, and we already know most of the roster. Team USA will reportedly include LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Joel Embiid, Anthony Davis, Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Booker, Anthony Edwards, Jrue Holiday, Bam Adebayo and Jayson Tatum. There seemingly will not be competition at training camp to determine who makes the cut. The team has, at least mostly, been chosen in advance. So yes, one more player will eventually make the cut. But there are far more players that are seemingly worthy, and even the last choice will stand out as having been more of a last-minute decision than an essential element of the team. So with only one spot remaining, let's go through the best players who missed the cut and figure out who got snubbed from the Olympic roster. As a reminder, Team USA previously set a 41-player pool of potential roster candidates. A total of 30 remain off of the team after 11 were chosen. Those players are: Jarrett Allen, Paolo Banchero, Desmond Bane, Scottie Barnes, Mikal Bridges, Jaylen Brown, Jalen Brunson, Jimmy Butler, Alex Caruso, De'Aaron Fox, Paul George, Aaron Gordon, James Harden, Josh Hart, Tyler Herro, Chet Holmgren, Brandon Ingram Kyrie Irving, Jaren Jackson Jr., Cam Johnson, Walker Kessler, Kawhi Leonard, Damian Lillard, Donovan Mitchell, Chris Paul, Bobby Portis, Austin Reaves, Duncan Robinson, Derrick White and Trae Young. In the end, though, four players stand out as snubs: Jalen BrunsonBrunson, Haliburton and Edwards were the three primary ball-handlers for Team USA at the 2023 World Cup. Edwards was the best of the three and led the team in several statistics, but all three performed well on the world stage. Before the tournament began, Team USA head coach Steve Kerr raved about Brunson's fit on the team. "I think Jalen is such a natural leader," Kerr said. "Because he's a point guard, he immediately comes to mind. He's the one who's leading the '1, 2, 3 USA' chant. Some guys just, it just comes naturally to them."In the end, Haliburton and Edwards made the cut. In a normal Olympic cycle, Brunson probably would have as well. Instead, he's crowded out by a field that includes multiple former Olympians (Devin Booker, Jrue Holiday) and
