In IWG plc's #FutureofWork report for 2024, I was really intrigued by their discussion of sustainability: "It has been shown that buildings currently account for 40% of societal energy use, and that every unused desk in an office creates a tonne of unnecessary CO2 each year, equivalent to driving a car 6,000 miles. As companies around the world consider their path to Net Zero, the environmental credentials of their office real estate are increasingly coming under the microscope... Employees are also demanding higher environmental standards from their employers: ‘climate quitting’ is a new entrant in the business lexicon to describe the trend, particularly among Gen Z, for workers to leave jobs or turn down job offers because a company’s ESG credentials are not up to scratch... The most significant way for companies to reduce their carbon footprint is to adopt flexible working." With my humble experience in managing various facilities, I have had the privilege to brainstorm with some of my comrades to improve their managed sites. Interesting, here's two focal improvements I have noticed needed in most organisations: Infrastructure Modernization: Aging infrastructure poses challenges in terms of functionality, reliability, and compliance and safety. It is therefore crucial and these are addressed periodically by way of refurbishing outdated facilities and furniture, upgrading essential utilities such as water and electricity systems, and retrofitting structures to meet seismic or environmental regulations. Health and Wellness Initiatives: Recognizing the importance of promoting employee health and well-being, facilities are incorporating wellness-centric features into their design and amenities. This may include the integration of biophilic elements such as indoor plants, access to natural light, ergonomic furniture, fitness facilities, and designated areas for relaxation and mindfulness activities. By prioritizing the physical and mental health of occupants, organizations enhance overall productivity and morale. In conclusion, facilities improvements encompass a wide range of initiatives aimed at enhancing functionality, efficiency, sustainability, and user satisfaction.
