I was lucky enough to grow up on the shores of Lake Geneva. In a little town called Versoix. It's peaceful and when the weather's nice, you can even see the summit of Mont Blanc in the distance. In #Switzerland, we often feel privileged and protected from everything. Spared from social and climatic crises, in our mountainous country in the heart of Europe. How to feel stressed and worried when you're surrounded by such magnificent landscapes as Lake Geneva. Over 70 kilometers long and 310 meters deep, it's Europe's largest freshwater reservoir. A gigantic expanse of transparent water with litter-free beaches can only be soothing... ❌ And yet, its waters reflect a global crisis. The lake's water temperature is warming 4 to 5 times faster than that of the oceans. It has even recently reached a record 13.6 degrees Celsius! This puts at risk the thirty or so species of fish and shellfish that live there, including some twenty native species. But also the hundreds of other species that gravitate around them (birds, insects, etc.). So, no, the climate crisis is not just a problem for tropical countries far away. In fact, Switzerland is warming much faster than the global average. The territory has already warmed by more than 2 degrees. And when global warming reaches 1.5 degrees - in Switzerland, it will reach +3 degrees. This is a global crisis, and we're all going to be affected. It will impact human lives and entire species. And also destroy places where we grew up and where we would have liked to create new memories with our children or grandchildren. ⏰ Dear Swiss friends, let's wake up. We are more responsible for this crisis than the vast majority of the world, not only because of our lifestyle but also because we are home to dozens of companies that finance or trade in fossil fuels. Just one example: 40% of the world's coal is traded in Switzerland! It's high time we put pressure on these companies, or made it clear that they're no longer welcome here, let alone on the shores of our beautiful Lake Geneva. Thank you Dr. Andrea Licata for making me aware of this disaster. Sources: Euronews, PublicEye Picture: Simon B. 😎

💡 As students studying energy and sustainable development, we're constantly faced with a flood of informations about the critical condition of our planet, largely due to human activities that harm it. The urgent warnings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) about climate change make us feel a huge responsibility toward nature. Sometimes, though, it's hard to put into words exactly how we feel about it all. That's where Imane SAHLI's article "Eco-anxiety : Unraveling the Nexus between Our Mental Well-being and Environmental Changes !" comes in—it explores the emotional side of our concern and offers guidance on dealing with it. #ClimateChange #Environment #Health 🔗 https://urlr.me/Y3kpB

I was lucky enough to catch up with my friend and colleague Ray O'Brien today in my home town....always a treat. We talked about many things, as we often do, but one topic we do often touch on is the wellbeing of climate professionals and what we can do to support ourselves and each other through the ups and downs of working in climate change and sustainable practice. While we didn't have all the answers to the questions, we both agreed that it is something that we should encourage speaking openly about, and if either (or any) of us come up with solutions we should share them. Today I don't have any solutions, currently finding myself in an ebb rather than a flow, which I am hoping attending the #climatechangeandbusinessconference next week will help to resolve. However, I did come across this journal article when I returned to my desk. It highlights that guilt and lack of efficacy are two concepts of particular relevance to climate professionals emotional state, something that I am sure we all agree with. One of the solutions it recommends is coming together to share worries and inspire action, that professionals often feel lonely and isolated. This one I can also relate to and is why I am personally involved in so many networking groups to help aid these conversations....but why are we too proud in these fora sometimes to say "I'm not doing well, it is too hard for me at the moment". We don't always have stories of hope and solutions to bring to the table. Sometimes we just need a big hug and a bit of a cry and that is OK too... Anyway ... to be completely honest this article didn't really share too much more that what we already know but I'm pleased to see the research community working in this space. It's OK to not be OK all of the time. You don't always have to be a voice of hope. I am always here if you need a shoulder or a big hug (and I ask the same from you). Arohanui whanau. Take care of yourself and each other. https://lnkd.in/gcBmRGy6 #climatechangeandhealth #climatechangeandmentalhealth #climatechangeandwellbeing

Mesmerising, beautiful, haunting ….I have never seen anything quite like this but I cannot think of anything better to share on Earth day. Why? Because we understand the science We have seen the horror stories … and We have been inspired by climate heroes But sometimes, we just need something that stirs our soul to make us sit up and take notice.
"A profound transformation of our global environmental challenges will not happen purely by calculating carbon balances. Rather, authentic encounters between human beings of different cultures may ignite the very spark needed to leap-frog us forward as a global society. Conscious, purpose-driven travel creates a positive impact – ultimately contributing to climate mitigation and resilience. Because it inspires individual transformation and as such, fuels the collective societal transformation our planet urgently needs." Written by: Monika Schaffner, Executive Contributor

🌱 How do we find learn to find peace with chaos? I obsessed about what reflections to put in the last 2023 edition of The Green Fix. Because two years ago my climate work depressed me. I used to ask what was the point of all this striving, all this work and love and rage, only to see politicians throw the efforts aside. 🐌 But now I realise thinking in terms of ‘points’ is too linear for a cyclical earth. Success is not the goal of seeking sustainability and justice. To help the planet is to help ourselves. To plant a tree is to make it rain. To build a home is to house people who have not even been born. I am here because you are here. Because we are trees, you understand?🌳 Trees can grow forever without reaching the sky. The journey is the destination. To be unlearning and changing is to be human, is to be a plant, is to be a stream, capable of constant transformation with no vestige of a beginning and no prospect of an end. 🌀 In a circular world, there is no guarantee of a happy ending because there is no ending. Isn’t that wild? Every single bad thing will eventually pass. We ask how we can bear these times. But we can bear a lot when we bear it together. Like an ecosystem, we must cooperate to thrive. We create moments of rest, happiness and love in the midst of ecological and social suffering as naturally and intuitively as breathing and sleeping. 🔥 Don’t believe those who seek to polarise us to the point of hatred, prejudice and murder. We are more united than divided. After all, I am because you are. Gen Z’s climate anxiety is real and needs action — for everyone’s wellbeing, study shows. "These young people are very concerned and, in a way, intimidated by the lack of concrete action being taken to battle climate change. Gen Z has serious concerns which will not only impact their mental health — which will be something society and the public health system will have to deal with — but also the choices young people make: how they spend their money, whether they have families, their choice of career and more... Gen Z should consider participating in more traditional or mainstream areas of activism such as political campaigns to engage with policy makers and better connect with other generations to influence decision makers, to accelerate climate action, and help safeguard a livable planet for all. This can include finding out how they can be part of the solution in their personal lives, whether it’s choosing a career which has an impact or adjusting the products or food they consume. While the challenges of climate change can be scary it is not too late for Gen Z to make a difference fighting for a sustainable future..." https://lnkd.in/gz4HKd_j #climatechange #climateanxiety #genz #climateaction #wellbeing #mentalhealth #publichealth #populationhealth #climatechangeadaptation #sustainablefuture

#sustainability #climateaction

69% of the global population expresses a willingness to contribute 1% of their monthly household income to fight global warming, according to results from a big survey published in 'Nature Climate Change' yesterday. 🔴 There is much variety across countries, ranging from Myanmar (93%) to Egypt (30%). Willingness in some big Western countries is below average: United States (48%), UK (47%), France (51%), while Denmark scores 72%. 🔴 In countries that are most resilient (measured by GDP), individuals are less willingness to contribute (they may feel better protected). In countries that are more exposed to climate risks, there is higher willingness to contribute. 🔴 86% of global population endorses pro-climate social norms and 89% demand intensified political action. This shows broad support for climate protection measures across countries. The representative survey was carried out in 125 countries (n=130,000). As always, such results can be impacted by social desirability bias, but the survey used relative constructs to account for substantial variation of income across countries. Let's not be fooled by shady politicians and lobbyists who want to make you believe that there is no support for climate action... === Link to study (open access): "Globally representative evidence on the actual and perceived support for climate action" (https://lnkd.in/d-jndW4M). #climatechange
