It's one month until 4/20, and this year it's on a SATURDAY! If you are a brand or retailer, consider this 30-day action plan. It's time to narrow your focus, execute flawlessly, and refine what makes you unique! Flashback to last year... 🔵 REC$ sales ➚ 16.8% in MAR '23 🔵 REC transactions ➚ 15.8% 🔵 MMJ$ sales were up 10.3%, with MMJ transactions up 9.8% 🔵 MAR '23 REC AOV, at $44.60 (high water mark for all 2023). APR '23 REC AOV nearly as impressive at $44.23 April '23 was still strong but did not outperform March '23. 🔴 REC$ sales ➘ 3.5% 🔴 REC transactions ➘ 2.7% Why was March '23 so significant? 📍 Many retailers ran aggressive promotions at the end of March, pulling much of the anticipated sales boon for 4/20 forward The higher REC AOV's in MAR and APR tell me three things: 1⃣ Shoppers were ready to spend on big(ger) baskets—maybe it's spring in the air, perhaps it was the promotions signaling 4/20, but shoppers in a price-elastic, canna-savvy market like NM know to look for the big 4/20 deals starting in the third week of March. Last March featured five Fridays, and last April had five Saturdays. 2⃣ The TX Shopper delivered. In key border markets (within a 10-minute drive of TX) in March '23: 🔵 REC AOV of $63.11 (v. statewide of $44.60) 🔵 REC$ sales ➚ 14.8% 🔵 REC transactions ➚ 16.2% 🔵 REC$ sales ➚ in every border market. That is the only time over the past 12 months that this has occurred 3⃣ Flowhub's 4/20 retail guide, released on 2/5/24, states that 69% of all 420 transactions included a discount in 2023 and that the average discount amount per transaction was $19. Despite that downward pressure on retail margins, NM REC AOV increased. That tells me that increased items in the basket offset heavy discounting.
