It's week two of your internship, do you know who your mentor is? You're typically assigned a mentor from the firm each summer. Some may be at the partner level and some may be VP level. Either way, take advantage and: 1. Reach out to your mentor to have coffee/meet every 2-3 weeks 2. Ask about their client development and their role at the firm 3. See if you can be included in any meetings or be staffed with them 4. Talk to them about career trajectory, how the markets are doing, and the firm's outlook 5. And lastly, get all the best practices you can get ABSORB all the information you can get This helps you better understand your role and how important it is in the investment banking organization. And if you don't have an assigned mentor, reach out to senior school alumni and do all the things stated above!

Hey investment banking interns..... Here's some advice: 1. Ask questions often to clarify work requests 2. Ask questions to understand the work you're doing 3. Ask questions about your clients & how this work helps them 4. Ask questions regarding technical acumen to learn it correctly 5. Ask questions to prevent spinning your wheels frustrating team members The key here is: Ask Questions.... Walk away from that internship with as much information So you can make the best decision on that full time offer You earned!

Passionately committed to increasing diversity and inclusivity within the US & European alternative investment space
A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of speaking with some brilliant interns from the Small Business Investing Scholars Program. If you’re not familiar with the SBIS, it’s the first-ever diversity internship program (launched by Avante Capital Partners in 2019) intended to promote diversity and inclusion within the SBIC industry. There are currently over 30 firms who participate in this program so if you’re not familiar with it, check it out! One piece of advice I shared was something that I wish someone had told me when I was just starting out that is applicable across the board. Yes, follow your passions and interests but also be realistic and pragmatic about your career journey. It’s essential to understand that you might not land your dream job or work at your dream firm immediately after graduation, or after your time in investment banking, or even when you move to the buy-side—and that's OK. Build your expertise—prioritize great deal experience and opportunities to build robust technicals and network intentionally, knowing that the path to your ideal role and firm might require several steps and strategic decisions along the way. In other words—let patience, purpose, and intention guide you. Remember, building a career is more of a marathon than a sprint. . . . #privateequity #lowermiddlemarket #middlemarket #career
