It's week two of your internship, do you know who your mentor is? You're typically assigned a mentor from the firm each summer. Some may be at the partner level and some may be VP level. Either way, take advantage and: 1. Reach out to your mentor to have coffee/meet every 2-3 weeks 2. Ask about their client development and their role at the firm 3. See if you can be included in any meetings or be staffed with them 4. Talk to them about career trajectory, how the markets are doing, and the firm's outlook 5. And lastly, get all the best practices you can get ABSORB all the information you can get This helps you better understand your role and how important it is in the investment banking organization. And if you don't have an assigned mentor, reach out to senior school alumni and do all the things stated above!

And just like that our 2023/24 Summer Internship comes to end!    Over the last 3 months Alana Chhour, Chloe Lo & Ryan Richards have been part of our Investment Solutions team, updated sector collateral, managed our Investment Enquiries Inbox, actively participated in a range of L&D opportunities, including L&D week, and had a great time building their networks and connections within the wider NZTE whānau.   I asked them what their highlight & key learning was during their time with us and here's what they had to say - there are a few nice reminders in there for us all  [🙂]   Highlight: Chloe - Working with all the Investment Managers and Analysts, gaining different insights from them, having training experiences on different topics. Alana - L&D week organised by the Solutions team was a great way to come together and collaboratively learn from others on various topics. Ryan - All of the learning opportunities given to us throughout, including the trainings from the analysts when we started, the coffees and kōrero with the wider Investment team, and L&D week.   Key learning: Chloe - Don't be afraid to ask questions, it's better to always ask than to realize you are wrong after you finish! Alana - Get amongst everyone and talk to as many people at NZTE as you can. They all have lots of unique and interesting experiences, skills and learnings they can teach you. The Young Investors Society Global Youth Investment Summit winners from our Global Stock Pitch and Case Study Competition each won a Summer internship at an investment firm. Below you can read Carl Lu's experience at Evolution Global Advisors. Experience, Experience, Experience!!! Meet Kafeel Mohammad a MS Physics student at UCL. He has done spring weeks at EY, Barings and Macquarie. He is also an Incoming PJT Partners, Bank of America, BP, Barclays, BDO Global Spring Intern. He has had mentoring from professionals at Morgan Stanley and BCG. He is also an incoming Macquarie Summer intern. Plus he is an entrepreneur!! 🤯 So safe to say he understands how to secure a Spring week and convert them. Here are his top tips. 1) To stand out you have to make sure you’re engaged the entire time - that means always putting your hand up to ask questions always starting off by introducing yourself briefly 🙋🏾♂️ 🙋🏾♀️ 2) The lunches are a networking opportunity so take full advantage because they’ll be watching especially if it’s in person 🥘 3) Be up to date so read the news leading up to it and also figure out what the company specifically is working on too 📰 4) Read the news after every day to catch up on what happened so you can have the most up to date information on whatever they people at the firm are working on 🗞 5) Be friendly and arrive on time every single day because people are taking note ⏲ 6) Be a team player and try not to consider your cohort as competition (they are) but nobody likes someone who tries to show people up or show off make sure you take in any ideas and build on them 👨👨👦👦 7) For more detailed ideas of what your specific spring conversion will entail just ask someone who did it the year prior 🎤 Please feel free to reach out to connect with him and ask any questions you may have.
