Unemployment among youth in Africa is alarming and this calls for action to address the root causes that perpetuate this challenge and to explore how we can reshape our education system to forge a path toward a brighter, more prosperous future for the next generation. The root causes of unemployment include; •High population growth rate. This results into a sustainable youth demographic which increases competition for jobs putting immense pressure on the labor market. •Limited access to quality education. Most youth lack acces to quality education which is due to high poverty level. •Mismatch between education and market needs.There is often a mismatch between skills possessed by graduates and those demanded by the job market. •Inadequate job opportunities.Despite educational achievements, there is a scarcity of job opportunities in various sectors contributes significantly to youth unemployment. •Lack of entrepreneurial opportunities. The absence of a conducive environment for entrepreneurship limits young people's ability to create their own opportunities. Structuring the education system to address youth unemployment includes: •Practical skills development. Shifting the focus towards practical skills development ensures that graduates are equipped with the hands-on expertise demanded by the job market. •Collaboration between educational institutions and industries. Establishing strong ties between educational institutions and industries is crucial. Collaboration ensures that academic programs align with the current needs of the job market. Finding internship opportunities will become easy . •Enhanced technical and vocational training. Strengthen vocational education to equip students with relevant technical skills required in the market. •Integrating comprehensive career guidance programs assists students in making informed decisions about their future. This involves identifying their strengths, guiding them towards suitable career paths. •Entrepreneurship promotion. Encouraging entrepreneurship within the education system fosters a spirit of innovation and self-reliance. Integrating entrepreneurship education into the curriculum can empower young individuals to create their own opportunities. The fight against youth unemployment requires a comprehensive and collaborative approach. Let us unite in our commitment to restructuring the education system, empowering our youth with the skills they need to succeed, and creating an environment where employment opportunities abound. Did You Know? 🤔 The basic skills needed to participate in today's modern economies are lacking in over 2/3 of the world's youth. It is estimated that by reaching universal basic skills among global youth, the world could add 700 trillion USD to global GDO by the year 2100. While Covid-19 disruptions to education and changes in education policies and practices have impacted progress significantly, education levels have been steadily increasing over the last two decades. However, there is a major mismatch in labor market demand and potential employee skills. In Africa, 80% of youth aspire to highly skilled jobs, but just 8% of youth achieve this goal. Approximately 82% of Africa's workers operate in the informal market, along with 56% in Latin America and the Carribbean, and 73% in developing Asia. Economic opportunity is a major driver of migration, leading to brain drain in many countries that cannot yet provide highly skilled and highly compensated roles. In order to achieve equitable progress in economic growth and opportunity, context is key. National strategies must consider their own needs and design education programs to better match youth skills with labor market demands. Creating Solutions to Youth Unemployment Through Education in Africa In the vast expanse of Africa, the age group of 15 to 24 faces a pressing challenge, constituting nearly 200 million individuals, with 40% actively part of the workforce and a staggering 60% grappling with unemployment. The key question: What causes this issue, and how can education be the antidote? The Root Causes: Understanding the roots of Africa's high youth unemployment reveals multifaceted challenges. Limited access to quality education, curriculum-industry mismatches, and insufficient job creation opportunities etc., contribute with economic instability. Educational and Economic Disparities: Youth unemployment is fueled by these disparities across the continent. Unequal access to quality education and job opportunities based on location, gender, etc., can create a divided workforce, with some possessing market demand skills and others lacking such opportunities. Technological Lag: In an era dominated by technological advancements, a lack of digital literacy and access to technology leaves a significant portion of Africa's youth unemployed. The Fourth Industrial Revolution demands tech proficiency, leaving the unskilled excluded from emerging job markets. Solutions: Addressing these root causes is urgent, highlighting the paramount role of education as a catalyst for change, fostering a skilled, adaptable workforce. Bridging the Educational Gap: Collaboration between governments and institutions can bridge the gap, updating curricula, integrating vocational training, and promoting digital literacy to equip youth with market demand skills. Fostering Inclusivity and Equality: This solution ensures equal access to education and employment opportunities are vital. Policies prioritizing marginalized communities, promoting gender equality, and investing in underserved regions foster a more inclusive job market. Embracing Technological Integration: Access to digital resources, incorporating coding and digital skills, and fostering innovation hubs empower Africans to contribute to the evolving technological landscape. Entrepreneurial Education: This nurtures a generation not solely reliant on traditional employment. But also innovation. It empowers Africans to create opportunities, leading to economic growth and job creation. Industry-Academia Collaboration: Strategic collaboration between educational institutions and industries is instrumental. This facilitates internships and real world exposure, enhancing students' practical knowledge and employability. At a recent roundtable discussion hosted by youth development group Afrika Tikkun and tech giant Microsoft, #business #leaders from South Africa's largest corporations questioned whether the country's unemployment problem is due to a lack of jobs or a mismatch between the skills that young people have and the skills that employers need. During the dialogue held under the theme Skills Gap, Youth Employability and Employment industry leaders also identified a critical issue that is hindering progress in South Africa's skill development ecosystem: a lack of coordination and collaboration between employers and those who provide young people with skills. Today, we Celebrate World Youth Skills Day!   Today, we join the global community in celebrating World Youth Skills Day. The theme "Youth Skills for Peace and Development" underscores the importance of equipping young people with essential skills for fostering global peace and driving sustainable development. This comes at a critical point in a world experiencing crisis.   I particularly celebrate the lofty strides of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration towards youth skills development. The National Policy on Skills Development has been a cornerstone of these efforts, integrating job-relevant skills training from the earliest level of education through university - - what I consider a comprehensive approach to preparing young Nigerians for employment and self-reliance, reducing unemployment, and empowering the youth. Also, the government’s strides towards promoting youth participation in governance, green job opportunities, and renewable energy solutions is a holistic approach that not only addresses unemployment but also ensures that our youth are at the forefront of sustainable practices. By collaborating with global technology leaders, Nigeria is opening doors for its youth on an international stage, equipping them with innovative skills and creating a more conducive economic environment.   These efforts align perfectly with the WYSD theme for this year, highlighting the intersection of skills, peace, and sustainable development. They are a testament to Nigeria's dedication to harnessing the potential of its youth, fostering an environment of peace, and ensuring sustainable development. Let’s continue to support and celebrate the vast potential of our youth. Together, we can build a future where every young person has the necessary skills to thrive and contribute to a more peaceful and prosperous world. Aug 12 is observed as the International Youth Day. It is an occasion to honor the qualities inherent in youngsters that drive positive change and draw attention to the issues they face. Over 60 % of Pakistan’s population is under 30 years old. This demographic composition could either be a great asset or a huge liability. When equipped with skills and provided with adequate employment, the country’s burgeoning youth would serve as a catalyst for economic growth; lack thereof would intensify poverty, crime rate and other challenges. In the given situation, HR professionals can play a significant role to see that Pakistan’s youth turns into an asset through various measures, including but not restricted to: 1. Provide dedicated mentorship and empathetic leadership to new entrants so that they can quickly overcome initial challenges at work 2. Equip them with skills they need to thrive in their job, especially digital skills 3. Establish close collaboration between academia and industry to enable seamless transition from education to employment Besides, the youth of the country has enormous potential. It is the duty of every individual and institution to fully harness this potential so that these young people would blossom into accomplished professionals.

Youth employability is not an African problem, it's a global one. Africa's booming youth population is set to have profound global consequences. With sub-Saharan Africa expected to see an increase of 76 million in its youth labor force by 2050, the world must recognize that the employability of African youth is a matter of global concern. Over 256 million young people worldwide are not in employment, education, or training, with 75% of sub-Saharan African youth in insecure work, often lacking decent employment opportunities. While this may seem daunting, it also presents a massive opportunity. The youthful workforce of Africa could drive global economic growth if the right policies and investments are made to provide decent work and skills matching. To harness this potential, the international community must focus on scaling up education, improving labor market access, and addressing inequalities in job creation. Empowering Africa’s youth with the right tools and opportunities will not only solve regional issues but also contribute to global economic stability. The report detailed that during the third quarter of 2021, South African blacks in comparison to other race groups were standing at an unemployment rate of 39%. This was at least 9% higher than that of coloured South Africans and 30% higher than that of white people. It further indicated that youth unemployment in the country was, however, also correlated with the educational levels of the youth. It revealed that a staggering 40% of unemployed youth did not possess a matric certificate, while that figure was 37% for youth with a certificate. In comparison, it added that the number of young unemployed graduates stood at 13%, which was 22% lower than the national average. In officiating the report, Mashatile said he agreed with the UNDP that the high unemployment rate in the country was a “ticking time bomb” waiting to happen.'
