There are many pitfalls in the labeling of organic foods, not to mention the many types of "organic" and "all-natural" labels that tend to only confuse consumers further. Most assume that organic means entirely pesticide-free, and even locally-grown. One of the largest misconceptions is that "organic" means "cruelty-free"- definitely not!
While I'm not entirely sure how helpful this effort will be in the long run, it's good to see "organic" redefined and explained in depth to a country of consumers. This update will be welcomed by many!
The best part is probably the deep investigation promised into the animal welfare portion of the organic equation, including the treatment of cattle, beak trimming, etc. Of course, the fact that vertical farming and "sunless crops" will FINALLY be involved in a legal definition of the word is fantastic. Soon, we'll know quite a bit more about the food we're buying- at least in Canada!

The Organic Federation of Canada (OFC) is preparing to update Canada’s organic standards.
The OFC will add new practices and permitted substances, revise the sections on animal welfare, and explore agriculture practices such as vertical agriculture and sunless crops.
They are currently surveying stakeholders about physical alterations in dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, goats and pigs, and beak trimming, breeds, perch access, and density in poultry.
