If you could choose between attending the Opening Ceremony at the Olympics or having an early night would it be? The incredible Ben Hunt-Davis MBE - winner of an Olympic Gold medal at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 asked us that very question at The AEV Association of Event Venues Ltd (AEV) Annual Conference, where he was sharing story of how the Great Britain’s men’s eight crew decided to not attend the celebrations of the Opening Ceremony, instead opting for early night in preparation for the next day. Why? Well, - in in Ben's words - it was a conscious choice to take action against the question "Will it make the boat go faster?". Which it clearly did, because the very next day they went on to win GOLD! 🏅 His words hit deep — it's about doing what's right for YOUR GOALS. Whatever it is you want, it's the little choices you make daily that make the difference. And how do you know what those are? By tuning in authentically to yourself. It's tempting to follow the crowd, but in life, make choices that make YOUR boat go faster. So what makes your boat go faster? Is it an early night because you know you need to go to the gym in the morning, because you want to be fit? Is it planning out your working week because you want to spend time with your children? Ok y'all, we need to talk about one of the best best BEST stories out of the Olympics that happened on Monday. Simone Biles lost in the Floor exercise event final. She's never lost at that event in an international competition if my quick Google search on the topic is accurate. But she got silver, and Jordan Chiles of the US got Bronze... and Brazil's sensational gymnast, Rebeca Andrade, got gold. It would have been very, very easy for the US women to just stand politely while Andrade was announced as the champion, but no - that's now what they did. They bowed to her - completely unironically. It makes for a beautiful picture of women supporting each other for us to look at, and a beautiful opportunity for viral videos and posts all over. But you know what i love just as much? The quiet support on the sidelines that we saw between these women throughout the Olympics - and other women too. The lesson here? You can compete with someone AND ALSO fiercely support each other and wish other people success. It might not be possible for two people to both win a gold medal, or get the same job, or be promoted to the same role... But it's definitely possible to stop treating life like it's a zero-sum game where your competition is your enemy. You CAN support other people in their endeavors. You can do it as publicly as Biles and Chiles did for Andrade at the medal ceremony. You can do it quasi-publicly, like many gymnasts did for each other on the sidelines. You can do it privately via text, email, or one-on-one conversation. A rising tide lifts all boats. 🏅Lessons from non-traditional sports at the Paris Olympics🏅 Reflecting on the Paris Olympics, three non-traditional events and the remarkable gold-winning athletes stood out for me – not just for their extraordinary performances, but also for the valuable lessons they offer to the corporate world. 1. Sport Climbing: Janja Garnbret and Toby Roberts exemplified the importance of focus and the ability to tackle complex challenges on the fly. In the corporate world, success often depends on our capacity to adapt and strategically navigate unexpected obstacles. 2. Kayak Cross: Noemie Fox and Finn Butcher showcased the need for a balance between agility and precision to navigate treacherous waters. Similarly, in business, we must often steer through challenges with both speed and control. 3. Breaking (Break Dancing): Ami Yuasa and Philip Kim demonstrated how embracing a unique style and pushing boundaries can lead to success. While the jury is still out on whether this should be counted as a sport, it undoubtedly teaches us that fostering creativity and individuality in the corporate world can drive innovation and set an organisation apart. In our professional and personal lives, we all run into troubles sometimes. Do you have that person, that team, who always has your back and helps you through the tough times, or are they just waiting to stab you in the back and kick you while you are down? In those crucial moments, make sure to surround yourself with people you trust and avoid those who lie, cheat, and manipulate others for their own gain. How, you ask, does one find that person, that team to rely on? Simple, by being there for them when they are in trouble. So if you see a coworker struggling, offer to help, offer to listen, and offer your understanding and compassion. Trust and loyalty is a two way street. Only by offering it to others will you get it back.

She was a professional athlete and exceeded her limits. You will too. Everyone has limits. When you find them, you can’t save yourself. Working remote removes you from a natural support system where people see you daily - in person. When the camera is off, no one sees you drowning or your life struggles. When the camera is on, everyone is to busy to care. Many bosses (not leaders) dump their work and failures on you to push you further under. They care more about their hotel and airline status than your well being. Take care of yourself - every day. No Zero Days. Find your boundaries. Create a support system that will be there when the j.o.b. isn’t. Your mental health needs it.
