The 2023 Sabina Rust Memorial Prize winners have recently returned from the Paris Olympics! QIC Real Estate's Cassie Antony and Melissa Zanini had always been curious about the marketing efforts required to create a world-class global event with multiple international stakeholders, brand partners and global audiences. Cassie Antony, Marketing Manager at Pacific Werribee said "Experiencing my first #Olympics, what immediately struck me was how #Paris2024 harnessed the power of #storytelling. From a marketing perspective, this included all touch points from TV and print to digital platforms, brand partnerships, live-site screenings and onsite activations. This approach instilled a deep sense of connection, blending my pride as an Australian with a strong feeling of unity with all the countries represented in the global community. While Australian shopping centres and the Olympics differ greatly, both strive to create memorable experiences and engaging diverse audiences. Attending the Paris 2024 Olympics was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, offering unmatched insights and inspiration. The event highlighted the power of a shared vision, leaving a profound impact on both my professional and personal journey. I am incredibly grateful for this experience and the valuable lessons it provided." The SCCA's Marketing Awards crown of the ‘best of the best’ shopping centre marketing campaigns across Compelling Experiences, Retailer Marketing, Brand & Partnerships, Innovation and Community Award categories. The entry with the highest score regardless of the category entered will be awarded the Sabina Rust Memorial Prize for Campaign of the Year. The winner receives $15,000 from the Shopping Centre Council of Australia as a contribution towards professional development in the marketing area. The Runner Up (which is the entry with the next highest overall score in a different category) will receive $5,000 from the Shopping Centre Council of Australia as a contribution towards professional development in the marketing area.

The shopping centre industry has welcomed the Queensland Parliament's passage of the Community Safety Bill 2024 which includes the expansion of ‘Jack’s Law’ to enable police to undertake metal detecting wanding operations in shopping centres. The Australian Government's proposed merger reforms have alarmed the shopping centre industry, with major players warning that they were “poorly targeted” and had the potential to kill off the recovery in the still fragile sector. SCCA Chair and Region Group CEO Anthony Mellowes said “Our industry is not opposed to sensible change, but the unnecessary regulatory burden and market uncertainty could be quite harmful. “I really hope, and I say this respectfully, that Assistant Minister Andrew Leigh MP and Treasurer Jim Chalmers engage further with us and sort out sensible thresholds and carve-outs before the bill goes into the parliament.” See the Shopping Centre Council of Australia's comments here: 👇 https://lnkd.in/g3hh8wNy

Our Chief Executive Angus Nardi recently appeared before the Queensland Parliament’s Community Safety and Legal Affairs Committee to give evidence on the Queensland Community Safety Bill 2024. The Bill, among other things, expands #Jack’sLaw to enable wanding in shopping centres to enhance the capability of frontline members of the Queensland Police Service, which our industry supports. Our top priority is ensuring the community’s safety within shopping centres. We commend Police Minister Mark Ryan, the Queensland Police Service and Queensland Government for their engagement with our industry, and we will continue to work constructively to help ensure community safety and reduce retail and youth crime.

Thank you to the Wage Inspectorate Victoria for speaking to our members on the importance of compliance with child employment laws.
It was great to be invited to speak on Victoria’s child employment laws at the Shopping Centre Council of Australia's Industry Management Committee meeting, where we discussed licence requirements and the conditions for employing kids under 15. Our 5 strategic priorities help us deliver on our vision of productive and prosperous workplaces for all Victorians. One priority is to education and inform – it’s about using education to give businesses and workers with the knowledge they need to understand their rights and obligations and comply with the law.
