News broke this week that ESPN, Fox and WBD have joined forces to create a singular sports app. 🏀⚽🏈 Many are wondering what this means for the industry and what else may be ahead. Our EVP of digital supply chain, Jon Christian shared his perspective with MarketWatch. “With the cost of acquiring sports rights skyrocketing and an extremely competitive landscape that now includes the largest technology companies — Google, Apple, Amazon — deals like this make sense to reduce costs and maximize profits in the new streaming world,” Broadcast is going through a major transformation from traditional satellite to IP-based distribution and if done right (e.g. learning more on data, AI, and UX), this could add tremendous value to users’ viewing and interactive experience. With in-person sports, immersive experiences will be essential for media providers to stay alive and compete with the likes of Augmented Reality. 👤📱 https://lnkd.in/gb4dvjps

Sports Broadcasters: Instant Expert. The Paris Olympics should see some pretty cool innovations in Sports Broadcasting. Let's deep dive. Let's goooo: Paris 2024: A Broadcasting Revolution?? So, as we gear up for Paris 2024 , I'm hoping we're on the cusp of a broadcasting revolution. Let's break it down: AI-Powered Highlights: Intel's AI technology is set to automatically generate tailored highlights across 14 sports. As a producer/commentator, I'm reasonably excited to see how this will enhance our storytelling capabilities. Will it capture the nuances we pride ourselves on noticing? 8K Livestreaming: The first-ever end-to-end 8K livestreaming experience promises unprecedented visual quality. It's like bringing the Olympics into your living room but I wonder if our broadband infrastructure is ready for this leap. Multi-Camera Replays: AI-powered replay systems will create 3D models and additional viewpoints across 21 sports. This could revolutionise how we analyse performances. Personalised Viewing: Streaming platforms like NBC's Peacock are offering customisable multi-screen experiences. Pretty cool. Let's see how it goes. Real-Time Data Integration: AI-driven on-screen graphics will provide live athlete positioning and performance metrics. As commentators, we'll need to up our game to add value beyond these stats. Cinematic Approach: The use of cinematic lenses across all sports promises a more immersive viewing experience. Enhanced Audio: Immersive 5.1.4 audio capture will bring viewers closer to the action. I'm eager to see if it can truly capture the atmosphere. Vertical Video: The BBC's optimised content for mobile viewing is a nod to changing consumption habits. Cloud-Based Production: Increased use of cloud technology will reduce on-site equipment and carbon footprint. It's a welcome move towards sustainability in broadcasting. Social Media Integration: Expanded partnerships with platforms like TikTok, Instagram and YouTube aim to reach younger audiences. These innovations defo promise more immersive, personalised and engaging Olympic coverage than ever before. We must remember that our role is to enhance the athletic achievements. The technology should serve the story, not the other way around. #olympics #paris2024 #broadcast

I was reading an article from SVG Europe about how the broadcast landscape is morphing and how it is becoming a data-forward and interactive experience. "Younger generations don’t want to passively consume content. Production is now a more creative act that may involve an in-seat view of a fan as they watch and react to the content." (article here: https://lnkd.in/gFU-TUET) The world of live entertainment and sports is changing quicker than ever. Streaming services like Twitch or YouTube allow more fans to not just watch, but engage in the entertainment they consume. From live streamers playing video games to sports leagues streaming their content live on new platforms. New tech is allowing fans to interact with the content they consume and with other fans in real-time. It had me thinking, "This ain't your granddaddy's broadcasting world anymore." I say that somewhat in jest, as my grandfather, Albert Sauser, was in broadcasting his entire career at CBS and had a hand in producing some of the most exciting broadcasts in the 20th century, The Nixon-Kennedy Debates, the first several Superbowls, two Kennedy Funerals, etc. With the world of live streaming and the decline of traditional broadcast, it literally isn't my grandfather's broadcasting world anymore. Or is it? In his days, much like today, technology was quickly advancing. He was known around the newsroom for accepting the ever-changing world with open arms. When other engineers at the station would bemoan a new piece of tech, Al would respond by uttering his favorite phrase "Whatever!", giving a shrug, and then setting out to figure out how to integrate whatever newfangled gizmo was at hand. He embraced change, even when he maybe didn't understand it at first. So, in this ever-changing world of broadcast and media, I encourage you to take a page from Al's playbook, and embrace the change, even if you don't understand it in that moment and feel like saying "Whatever". I keep his old license plate, "WUTEVR4", framed in my office as a reminder for those days I don't feel the motivation to embrace such change. #sportsbroadcasting #twitch #broadcasting #youtube #livestreaming
