Developing our nation’s next generation of warfighters! Surface Warfare Schools Command (SWSC) Commanding Officer, CAPT Joseph Baggett, meets with RADM Pete Garvin, President, Naval War College (NWC) to discuss efforts as warfighting enablers by the two premier training and education organizations located onboard Naval Station Newport. NWC and SWSC regularly collaborate, supporting each other’s leader development programs designed to ensure decisive advantage in a complex and rapidly changing global security environment. Both organizations are vital to the Navy’s strategic focus on increasing naval competitive advantage to effectively deter aggression and succeed in long-term competition that challenges our national security, and to prepare our naval forces to succeed across the full spectrum of conflict. “Professional military education (PME) is a critically important part of building effective military leaders. This fact is sometimes overlooked due to the misguided belief that experience and field service alone will make the best leader.”
For new Air Force and Space Force officers think about how and when you will accomplish the following:
Masters Degree
Squadron Officer School
Air Command & Staff College
Air War College
Joint PME, like the Joint and Combined War fighting School
It’s not about “checking the box.” It’s about continually learning and becoming a better person for yourself and all those you work with.
#navalintegration is occurring at all echelons primarily with an emphasis at the Fleet and MARFOR level, or lower, small unit level. However, for the Navy DMO will still be executed at the CSG level. It would be wise for the FMF to start integrating with CSG training events to understand how the Navy will plan and execute operations in the "blue" water, so Marines can conduct operations in the "brown" water littoral areas and enable DMO. I encourage FMF units to reach out to CSG-4 (East Coast) / CSG-15 (West Coast) and see if they can participate in CSG events beyond current efforts. Marines will learn a lot which will better inform planners and commanders on how best to employ FMF forces, and the Navy will see the Marine Corps can contribute to the DMO fight.
Ah yes, the Naval Bridge Simulator aka the most involved video game you'll ever play. Expect to log many hours on these stone ships before you even step foot on a real HMC Ship. You'll learn to navigate the ship, use the bridge equipement effectively and work with your bridge team to keep the whole ship safe while conducting naval operations at sea. All of this without even leaving the school!
The coolest part about them? They are not just for trainees. The simulator will be a big part of your entire naval officer career as you progress through being a junior officer, a BWK, a department head and director. As you prepare for Command the bridge simulator will take on a whole new perspective while you learn to get comfortable sitting in "the Chair."
Being a Naval Warfare Officer is one of the most demanding jobs available in the Canadian Armed Forces. But you are well prepared in training and the bridge simulator is just one of these vectors.
“Port 30, set speed one-five!”
Another milestone achieved on the journey to becoming an Officer of the Watch! Reserve Naval Warfare Officers have the opportunity to complete their training in multiple modules. Throughout this training, they gain navigation skills, develop leadership, and learn about essential operating procedures and life on ship.

Commander, Naval Surface Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet, Vice Adm. Brendan McLane speaks during the "What Changes are Community Leaders Making to Meet Global Security Demands?" panel during WEST 2024. Now in its 34th year, the West symposium is sponsored by the Armed Forces Communication and Electronic Association (AFCEA) and the U.S. Naval Institute, bringing together military and industry experts. This year's theme is "Are Acquisition and Readiness on Pace to Meet Global Security Demands?"
These five incredible naval officers are all BOOST 1993 graduates! Each has a distinguished career filled with combat service, major command, major program manager or Navy and Marine Corps civil service tours, proving their dedication to excellence. And guess what? We’re all still going strong, making significant contributions to the Navy today.
The BOOST program is a shining example of how investing in potential can unlock remarkable leadership. #Navy#DiversityMatters#BOOSTProgram#LeadershipDevelopment
Royal NavyUK Ministry of DefenceGOV.UK what do you consider modern about wanting a Capt.(RN) to carry out the duties of a Commodore but without receiving the recognised pay of a Commodore? 🤔 (See first picture comment).
Full Steam Astern?
If this is how high ranking officers are treated in a modern Navy, then God help the ratings!
