Let’s talk about Quality of Life for All (QoLA) in pediatric palliative care—an approach that enhances the overall well-being of children and families facing serious illnesses. 💙 🐨 What is QoLA Care? 🐨 Quality of Life for All (QoLA), pronounced “koala,” means what it sounds like: helping our patients live their best possible lives. Our Quality of Life and Pediatric Palliative Care team Stanford Children's Health | Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford prevents, identifies, and addresses all kinds of suffering. This can happen at any stage of illness and is not synonymous with end-of-life care. 🌱 Why is QoLA Care important for children? 🌱 1. Comfort: ensures our patients live as well as possible, managing symptoms like pain, breathlessness, and nausea. 2. Compassion: provides emotional, psychological, and spiritual support for children, families, and even the medical team caring for them. 3. Communication: encourages an open, ongoing dialogue, so patients can express their wishes, concerns, goals, and values. 4. Comprehensive: embraces each family’s unique cultural, emotional, physical, and spiritual needs. Our holistic team includes chaplains, child life specialists, nurses, physicians, psychologists, and social workers. 5. Choice: QoLA Care upholds a child’s dignity and autonomy, allowing them to make informed decisions about their care and treatment. Across the nation, pediatric practices and health systems are investing in efforts to create better and more equitable health outcomes for pediatric patients. However, meaningfully engaging patients and their families can be difficult for pediatric practices due to a lack of time and resources for both pediatric care teams and patients. Bias within the medical system can also lead patients and families to distrust pediatric practices — particularly families of color. This tool aims to support pediatric practices, health systems, and CBOs by outlining practical considerations to help stakeholders foster more authentic engagement with patients and their families. The tool draws from the expertise of patient and family engagement leaders and pilot pediatric sites participating in Accelerating Child Health Transformation, a national initiative led by CHCS with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. https://bit.ly/3vv8eZu Hannah Gears; Lauren Scannelli; Armelle Casau; Jade Kissi

👶 May is NEC Awareness Month! 👶 As we observe NEC (Necrotizing Enterocolitis) Awareness Month, let's shed light on its impact not just on infants, but on their families and healthcare teams too. NEC is a serious intestinal disease that primarily affects premature infants, but can also occur in full-term infants. Its effects can be devastating, leading to severe complications and even death if not promptly treated. For families, NEC brings immense stress and worry. Watching a newborn battle such a condition can be emotionally draining and financially challenging. It often disrupts the joyous early moments of parenthood and requires families to navigate a complex healthcare journey. On the healthcare front, NEC poses significant challenges for the medical team. Treating NEC requires a multidisciplinary approach involving neonatologists, pediatric surgeons, nurses, dietitians, and other specialists. Coordinating care, making critical decisions, and providing support to families demand not just medical expertise, but also compassion and empathy. Enhancing Pediatric Care: The Impact of PEARS Training and Certification Unlocking the Potential of Pediatric Care: The Power of PEARS Training Pediatric care requires specialized knowledge and skills to provide effective and comprehensive care to young patients. Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization (PEARS) training and certification play a significant role in enhancing pediatric care delivery. By obtaining PEARS certification, healthcare providers can expand their abilities and positively impact pediatric care outcomes. In this article, we will explore the impact of PEARS training and certification on enhancing pediatric care. Specialized Pediatric Knowledge and Skills: PEARS training equips healthcare providers with specialized knowledge and skills necessary for effective pediatric care. Participants learn about the unique aspects of pediatric patients, including age-specific assessment, recognizing signs of distress, and appropriate interventions. This specialized training enhances healthcare providers' competence and confidence in delivering optimal care to pediatric patients. Improved Pediatric Assessment Techniques: PEARS training enhances healthcare providers' pediatric assessment techniques. Participants learn systematic approaches to assess pediatric patients, including evaluating airway, breathing, circulation, and mental status. This comprehensive assessment allows healthcare providers to identify underlying conditions, make informed decisions, and tailor interventions to meet the specific needs of each child. #CascadeTraining #MedicalCourse#PEARS #PediatricEmergencyCare #HealthcareTraining https://zurl.co/0GuD https://zurl.co/JBWA
