As a racer, you need to understand that being good in front of the media is just as important as being good behind the wheel. Why? Because motorsport is a team sport. You depend on your team that depends on sponsors that depend on the fans who buy their product and the tickets to watch you. So the circle starts and ends with you and what you say in public.
Check out this video by the Road Racing Drivers Club in their series SafeIsFast. It has some of the most respected US racers talk about why the media is important. Alexander Rossi for example says that the relationship a driver has with his comms teams is just as important as the one he has with his race engineers.
You also hear from Marshall Pruett, a well-respected, long-time US motorsport journalist. He says that it is important to always make sure to make the person you talk to feel like they are the most important person in your world right now. To look at them, not your phone or your shoes, and to fully focus. Sounds simple but there are numerous drivers who clearly have never heard that piece of advice. There are reasons why they don't focus, but that's a story for another post.
Today, we'll focus on why it is important how you talk to the media.
