The world was stunned by UK Ministry of Defence’s demonstration of the DragonFire LDEW system in action back in January, bringing science fiction to life and seemingly opening a new frontier in the battle against hostile drone incursions. DragonFire theoretically provides the solution to the challenge gripping allied militaries - how to ensure drone mitigation measures are not only effective but scalable, cost effective and reliable. Last week’s Counter UAS Technology Europe Conference featured unprecedented insight on the timeline accelerations, industry development and integration considerations that will determine how quickly we see LDEW systems deployed on the battlefield. Today in Autonomy: Crowd Funding a Naval Fleet Ukraine has announced an ambitious objective to build a fleet of 100 vessels and is seeking public funding to achieve this goal. Those who contribute $250,000 or more will have the unique opportunity to name a Ukrainian Magura USV. This unmanned system, which was recently showcased internationally for the first time, is set to assume a variety of roles traditionally handled by manned vessels. The RAF has launched a new strategy with a vision that by 2030 uncrewed systems will become an integral part of the RAF force structure to deliver battle winning military capability as part of a national or coalition force. Building on the Defence Drone Strategy, the RAF Autonomous Collaborative Programme (ACP) Strategy sets out how the Service will introduce ACP into frontline service over the next decade. The RAF is no stranger to operating uncrewed systems having conducted missions with Predator and Reaper systems in challenging coalition-led areas of operations spanning three continents. The war in Ukraine has highlighted the importance of this growing area and the ACP Strategy sets out how the RAF intends to take further advantage of this technology, working closely across UK Defence, with industry, and trusted partners and allies. It sets out what military capabilities and structural changes are required within the RAF to support this growth area, alongside the development of UK-based industry. The U.S. Army is leveraging Project Convergence to explore the aerial tier network extension, using high-altitude drones like the K1000ULE from Kraus to enhance connectivity and network robustness, especially in challenging environments like the Asia-Pacific region's dense foliage. This initiative, part of the broader Combined Joint All-Domain and Control (CJADC2) effort, aims to ensure seamless communication across all branches of the U.S. military and international partners, enhancing decision-making capabilities. The project has demonstrated success in extending network coverage over natural barriers, such as mountain ranges, and is set to undergo further testing in phase two of the Project Convergence Capstone 4 experiment at the National Training Center in California. This technology not only improves operational efficiency but also significantly reduces the risks to soldiers by minimizing the need to physically relocate to vulnerable positions for network extension.
