The power of word choice in sales/marketing/advertising should not be underestimated. I was reminded of that today when I heard a radio ad that said…. “The reality is…..” and what followed, I disagree with. It wasn’t my experience. I might have been receptive to the message if it had said, “For many people…”. Some might say “That’s okay. You’re just not part of their target market”, but that’s the thing. I am! While training and coaching salespeople, there are a few no-no words and phrases I ask them to eliminate from their vocabulary. One example is “just”. “I’m just calling to…” “I’m just writing because…” The importance of everything you communicate after that is diminished by that one little word. For a salesperson, having a full pipeline is a beautiful place to be; but most salespeople aren’t there. The Reasons? ……. 1. No strategic new client acquisition system. If you don’t have a clearly defined process that goes step-by-step from prospecting to closing, you’re wondering in the forest at night without light. 2. Inadequate sales training. Regardless of industry, eight core principles of sales exist. If you don’t know what they are and how to execute on them ALL THE TIME, EVERY TIME, you won’t move past being a novice. So many people fall into sales as a career, and so many companies don’t have a clear cut training in place. 3. Laziness. Yep, some are lazy or get lazy when things aren’t working out. They give up. I can’t help you there. You need to find your own motivation. 4. Poor quality products and/or services. This is often the scapegoat when the actual problem is more likely #1-3, but if the quality of the products and/or services is bad; it’s tough to sell. Rarely….RARELY is this the reason for sales not having a full pipeline. Most often used as an excuse, but it does occasionally happen. Some things you can see a long way off. Like when someone who has never engaged with me on LinkedIn wants to connect. I can see a long way off that they’re going to try and secure a meeting with me to pitch something. I’ve got no problem with salespeople doing their thing, but one thing I teach is to actually understand your prospect, where they are at, what they might be dealing with, and how your solution might be able to help. Don’t jump into someone’s inbox when you clearly haven’t shown any interest in them, their posts, their business, etc. “Hey Joe, I saw your post about (blank) topic and what struck me was (blank). Some (role) that I speak with have said they deal with (frustration). If you can relate, you need to see how we (result of solution). Would you care to see firsthand how it works? If not, it looks like you’ve got quite a few connections. Can you think of anyone else who might appreciate seeing something like this?” So much better than: “Hi Joe. This is what we do. Do you want to schedule a meeting?” I wonder if the people in my inbox recently will see this post? The good ones are paying attention.
