🐊 Urgent request for all who care about clean air in the Southeast and friends of the Okefenokee Swamp National Wildlife Refuge! Please respond by this Monday (Nov. 18)❗ Last month, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) announced a proposed boundary expansion of the refuge, adding approximately 22,000 acres. The expansion would allow the refuge to work with landowners to explore voluntary management actions that would protect the swamp’s hydrologic integrity, conserve wetlands, and safeguard the swamp and landowners from wildfires. This is our chance to protect the swamp for future generations, and we need your help to ensure the expansion moves forward. Here's how YOU can make a difference: ✅ Visit the One Hundred Miles website, where you’ll find all the info you need on the proposed expansion: https://lnkd.in/e9JCMUnJ. ✅ Send a quick email: The website provides a simple template you can use to express your support directly to the USFWS. It takes just a few minutes! The clock is ticking! USFWS must receive your email by Monday, Nov. 18! We need to show the USFWS that there is strong, widespread support for this expansion. Every email counts in helping ensure the protection of this vital ecosystem. The Okefenokee Swamp is a national treasure—a vast, biodiverse wetland that provides critical habitat for countless species. Let’s stand together and make sure the Okefenokee Swamp stays protected for generations to come! #Wildlife #WaterConservation #Conservation #Nature #RootLocal

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) recent report reveals that wetlands (mostly freshwater) now cover less than 6% of the lower 48 states, half their original area. Loss rates have increased by 50% since 2009. The report calls for action to reverse this trend and continue providing future generations with clean water, protection against natural disasters, resilience to climate change, and habitats for wildlife. #Wetlands #Conservation #NatureBasedSolutions

How do you hold a large alligator snapping turtle? I’d say VERRRY carefully. Recently staff at Natchitoches National Fish Hatchery released their last batch of alligator snapping turtles for the year. Since their head start program began, they’ve released a total of 494 alligator snapping turtles at Barksdale Airforce Base and several national wildlife refuges as part of a restoration project. These turtles are the largest freshwater turtles in North America and can weigh an impressive 250 lbs. National fish hatcheries raise fish and other aquatic animals to support conservation. We joined 60+ conservation groups across North America earlier this week in filing letters to urge the USDA Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to immediately prohibit the use of snowmobiles or other vehicles to run down, injure, or kill wildlife on all federal lands they manage. 🚫🐺 To the average citizen, running over coyotes and wolves with a snowmobile sounds inhumane, barbaric, and just plain cruel. But unfortunately, this practice is legal in Wyoming and Idaho (wolves and coyotes), and Montana (just coyotes), where wildlife policy is stacked against wild carnivores. You can learn more about "whacking" in our recent reel about this egregious practice. Both #Wyoming and #Montana had the opportunity to prohibit this practice in 2019 and FAILED to do so. Allowing this practice to continue has emboldened individuals like Cody Roberts to commit his heinous act of running over a yearling wolf in Wyoming before further torturing her in a bar and finally killing her. 💔 Unfortunately, even if Northern Rocky Mountain wolves eventually receive the federal Endangered Species Act protections they deserve (which is essential to prevent decades of conservation work from being undone, and why we’re suing U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), it would still be legal to run over coyotes with snowmobiles and other motorized vehicles. Thank you for standing with us to show Wyoming, and the rest of the country, that we will not allow wolves, coyotes, or any wild animals to be legally tortured. ✊ #Wyoming #Montana #Coyotes #Wolves #StopWildlifeMismanagement #PublicLands 📷 Larry Taylor, #CaptureCoexistence Contributor | @taylor.nature.photography

🌿🐺 The House has passed a bill to expand gray wolf hunting and trapping, raising profound concerns for wildlife conservation efforts. Led by Rep. Lauren Boebert and HR 764, this decision sidesteps scientific consensus and jeopardizes the delicate balance of our ecosystems. As this bill moves to the Senate, it's crucial to raise awareness and advocate for responsible wildlife management. While we can't guarantee its passage to the Senate, tracking its progress through congressional updates or news sources can provide insights into its likelihood of advancing. Together, we can protect our gray wolves and preserve the beauty and balance of our natural world. An update from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) on the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge: "The Southeast Region of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering a proposal that would expand the boundary of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, adding approximately 22,000 acres adjacent to the existing refuge. The Service is seeking public input on the proposal. If adopted, the proposed minor boundary expansion would enable the Service to work with willing landowners to explore voluntary conservation actions, including potential acquisition, that would further protect the refuge’s globally significant freshwater wetland system and wildlife habitat. The proposed expansion includes lands currently held by Twin Pines Minerals, LLC as well as a one-mile fuel reduction zone adjacent to the refuge." A public comment period is now open until November 18 with a public meeting in Folkston on October 29. Be on the lookout for upcoming information from the Georgia Conservancy. On Thursday, October 24th the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) moved to downlist the Red-cockaded Woodpecker from #endangered to #threatened under the #EndangeredSpeciesAct. The final rule will be published in the #FederalRegister on October 25th. This southeastern endemic woodpecker was first listed in 1973 and is reliant on mature pine forests. The USFWS cites the species marked improvement from an all-time low of an estimated 1,470 clusters of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers to today's estimate of 7,800 clusters ranging across 11 states from #Virginia to #Texas. As part of the #threatened status, a final 4(d) rule will continue to provide the same protections for Red-cockaded Woodpeckers as an #endangered species with new exceptions for routine law enforcement activities and habitat management and will provide species-specific exceptions for beneficial management practices. https://lnkd.in/gvi8JmjM Photo credit: Aaron Boone

Red Squirrel Appreciation Day 🐿️❤️ Once close to local extinction, Red Squirrel numbers are slowly increasing throughout Northern Ireland due to conservation efforts which have allowed this protected and priority species to now have sightings within every county. Wildlife conservation is crucial for the survival of many animals, plants and their habitats, especially the Red Squirrel, as these beautiful creatures play a vital role in helping our woodlands flourish.🌳 If you are lucky enough to have a Red Squirrel visit your garden, ensure that any bird feeders are cleaned regularly, or consider getting a ‘squirrel proof’ feeder which is placed above the ground. Incorrect supplementary feeding of red squirrels using shared feeders can promote local outbreaks of virus. 📸Have you captured a photo of a red squirrel recently? Share them in the comments below! #RedSquirrelAppreciationDay #RedSquirrel #Wildlife #Protect #AnimalCharity #Rescue #AnimalWelfare

Although there are more than 400 unique bird species that call the Great Plains region home, you might need to be a little eagle-eyed yourself to spot them. 👀 The expansive grasslands of North America provide an ideal habitat for many bird species with ample food sources and coverage from predators. However, this critical ecosystem is threatened by development and other stressors. U.S. grassland birds are among the fastest declining bird species due to habitat loss, tree and shrub encroachment, and pesticide applications. Together with ConocoPhillips and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), NFWF is currently seeking proposals to help address the loss of 3 billion birds since 1970 by supporting projects that conserve, restore, or enhance grasslands, among other priorities.
