Class is in session everyone take your seat while I take role call…. This week’s is called lessons learned, hot wash and After Action Reports (AAR). Things I would have done differently or learned along the way as leaving the military starting in 2018 and transitioning a second time 2024. Learn some helpful tips and experiences as a person going through the job search and recruiter. Monday’s Lesson: financial responsibility and admin The job doesn’t stop just because your at the neighbors birthday party in Jacksonville surrounded by veterans and active duty military. Typically questions from yesterday, tell me about retirement and Transiton from the military. The first thing I say to transitioning folks is get your admin and financial house in order. Which means ensure your DD-214 is accurate and up date. Errors in your DD-214 are harder to correct after your a veteran. You want all of the deployments names operations on your DD-214 Did you fill your VA claim yet? Because if didn’t stop what your doing and start filling 18-12 months prior to your EAS find all of your medical records, schedule all those appointments and procedures you have been holding off. 180 days before your EAS fill that VA cliam. Read the VA book before you fill to ensure you claim everything including mental health. Don’t buy a new car or house right before you depart the military unless you secondary recession proof income coming in. It’s much harder once you’ve been out for a while to recover. Mind your finances save whenever possible because disaster or lay offs can happen at anytime. Get a decent savings account together. Explore life insurance policies before you depart active duty because certain diagnosis will be rejected from insurance companies once your a veteran. Wills, power of Attorney’s and Trusts are important because the 1stSgt is yelling at you any more to get it done. Research where you will retire or transition each State has it’s own set of rules regarding VA benefits at the State level. Example North Carolina provides a DV license plate at no cost, lifetime hunting and fishing license, reduced property taxes, tax free on your military retirement, dependent children born in the state can at any State sponsored college for free, pending you are 100 permanent and total (P&T) Now let’s see if you are paying attention did I mention how get a job? You answered yes then you are not paying attention that is for another class. What is Branding and How do you know if your even doing it right? Today is #SocialSaturday and branding is part of being social. During this #Jobsweek experiment I wanted to see if this branding was going to work? The results yes we had an increased of our website througput and candidates applied to targeted jobs. So what is main take away from this experiment or marketing campaign is be seen. It’s 2024 and humans consume more things on their phones and electronic devices then anytime in history. Please fact check me 😂😂 But seriously if you want to be known for something you have be out front and be present. Clients, candidates customers and your network can’t find you if don’t show up. So my advice getting started is get started because regardless if it sloppy or uncomfortable it’s gets better with time. People buy what they see and trust, are you trustworthy to future employers, clients, customers and the network? I can’t answer that question nor can Chat or your favorite AI unless you feed it information. A 30 second review of my social media presence you can determine I run a recruiting agency that supports veterans. You will also see that I encourage people through videos and posts. Dig a little deeper and you’ll see government contracting, veterans mental health advocacy/lobbying. All of pictures are rolling in post the Military Influencer Conference 2024 in #Atlanta. The overwhelming amount of stories and pictures proves that a military veteran in this day and age should attend at least one MIC. Many days I am fighting the negative thoughts of imposter syndrome. But during the MIC I didn’t feel that way at all. I have a attended many different conferences, #defense, 3PL and hiring events. Felt in place a little but not completely comfortable At the MIC I was completely in my element. Now this was not some overnight success but many years of building relationships online that turn into real inperson relationships at the MIC. What was really refreshing folks could look you in the eye and say how are you doing, not the superficial “How ya Doing” Boston or NYC accent. How do you overcome imposter syndrome? one moment, one minute and one step at a time. I can’t promise that the path is going be easy, but easier every day when you put in the work. It’s been official for a few days now but it’s official again driving down to the Military Influencer Conference this morning. Google maps says it’s a smooth 6:47 hour drive from Jacksonville, NC to Atlanta, GA. It will be great catching up people I have only met on line.
