Small tip for those hiring designers, when you have a field for portfolio, be sure to have a place for applicants to also write their portfolio password. What's happening with ux and product designer job postings? css, javascript, and html as a requirement?! I need to talk about something that’s been bothering me a lot. I’ve seen several job postings for UX designers or product designers that list CSS, JavaScript, and HTML as mandatory skills. And it’s not just in the “preferred” section; it’s under “required”! This is already absurd on its own, but when you think about it, this is basically job creep. Let’s be honest, having a basic understanding of these technologies can be useful. It helps us get a sense of what can and can’t be done in code. But requiring a designer to be practically a front-end developer? That’s asking too much. We’re losing sight of the real focus of our work, which is creating incredible experiences for users, not writing code. What worries me is that these requirements are devaluing both designers' and developers' work. A UX or product designer should be focused on understanding users, crafting journeys, prototyping, testing, not solving code syntax problems. And you know what’s worse? This is disguised job creep. Instead of hiring two professionals, a designer and a front-end dev, companies want one person to do it all. This just leads to overwork and, on top of that, devalues the specialized work of each. If you’ve noticed these changes in UX and Product Designer job postings, what do you think about it? Do you think that in the future professionals will need to master both design and development to stay in the market? How much is too much when it comes to knowing tools? As designers, we’re expected to be creative problem solvers, but lately, job requirements seem to expect us to be a jack of all trades and master of every single one. Why should a graphic designer be required to know Python or JavaScript? How does it make sense for a UI/UX role to demand 3-4 years of experience in graphic design? The market is competitive, sure, but where do we draw the line? When does “being versatile” turn into an unrealistic checklist that pushes talent away rather than attracting it?
