Don't judge designers based on their portfolios 👇🏼 I know, That's probably the only quick and easy way to evaluate someone's design skills. But that's not the whole story. Here are some unseen perspectives: - Many seniors don't have the time to update their portfolios - Lots of projects can't be included in portfolios because of strict contract terms and NDAs - Crafting a good portfolio requires lots of time + effort and folks often get stuck in the hamster wheel of perfecting and not publishing - There's a huge lack of motivation for updating portfolios (rigorous process, tough market, unemployment, ...) - Many designers aren't comfortable sharing their portfolios with others and asking for feedback - Not all of the designers have good visual skills What else? -— - — - P.S. It makes me sad to see so many designers out there struggling with visual design. 🥲 Yes, the form shouldn't go above function, but how the product looks significantly influences how we perceive the product itself. That's why design-led companies are winning. Just getting the basics right can improve the visuals significantly.  Learning the principles of visual hierarchy, typography, and layout will take you a long way. As a hiring manager, even when hiring a UX designer role, a nice-looking portfolio will give you an advantage over the others. Act accordingly.

I feel like every agency or business owner... Gets to a point where they delegate. It's needed. Even if you are running something solo, you still delegate part of the job. Now whenever you delegate a part of a job of your agency... ...You have to be careful. Because it takes time to build something good. It takes time to build a name for yourself. And now, part of that responsibility lies on someone else's shoulder. This was the case for a Web Agency we helped recently. The agency was looking to hire a UI/UX Designer. But they needed a Contract for it. Mainly a Contract that makes sure: -> The designer knew exactly what he needed to do. -> The designer did not steal the IP of the agency. -> The designer did not share the sensitive info shared with him with other people. Landing a design job isn't as hard as it seems. Surprised? Let me explain. 👇🏻 A couple of months ago, I had the opportunity to be part of the hiring process for a UI/UX role at my company. I don't want to sound harsh, but most of the candidates' portfolios were disappointing, leading me to reject many of them during the screening process. The few candidates we selected for interviews were ok-ish, but I didn’t sense the passion or drive from them that showed they really wanted the job. It was kind of like, 'This is who I am, this is what I did, give me the job.' I was blown away by their unawareness of what it takes to land a job in the current economy. I’ve also heard similar stories from other designers responsible for hiring at their companies, making it hard to spot talent in the market. This got me thinking: if you do your 'homework' properly, it’s actually not that hard to land a job as a designer. _______________________________ I am curious to hear if other designers in charge of the above have faced similar situations?

A letter to designers from Developers😎 Dear UI/UX Designers, We, the developers, have a bone to pick with you all. First off, we love the new design – it's clean, it's modern, but it's... impossible to code😭. Like Seriously, did you use a random color generator for the palette? We've seen less complexity in a Rubik's Cube. And those curves on the buttons – are they meant to hypnotize us? Because they're working. We've been staring at them for hours trying to figure out the CSS. Also, a quick question: Do the hover effects come with a manual? We're thinking of hiring a magician to help us implement them. Seems like the only logical solution at this point. In all seriousness, your work is as beautiful as it is unfeasible. Keep it up, and we'll keep Googling "how to turn a PSD into a working website without losing our minds." Looking forward to the next challenge you throw our way! Should I keep pushing??? So ever since I transitioned into tech, there has been so many ups and downs. Trying to get a full-time role have not been easy, though I get gigs and all but we all know these gigs doesn't come all the time, that's why I've been on the hunt for a full-time job. Sometimes, I say to myself, should I just give up and do whatever job that comes my way? But because I am so passionate about design, I'm still holding on doing what is needed to be done, keep believing that one day I'll get to where I want to be. I know, so many others are like me out there, one thing I'll say: Keep pushing and Don't give up!!!
