🚀 Air Cargo’s Aging Fleet Crisis: What’s Next? The air cargo industry faces a critical challenge as demand continues to outpace available capacity. Experts at the World Cargo Summit warn that nearly half of the global freighter fleet will reach retirement age by 2030, with new aircraft deliveries struggling to keep up. Supply chain disruptions, manufacturing delays, and shifting airline priorities mean that air freight rates could rise as capacity remains tight. As aging aircraft exit the market and new ones arrive at a slow pace, the industry must brace for continued volatility. At John S. James Co., we help businesses optimize their freight strategies in an unpredictable market. Whether you're shipping by air, sea, or land, our experienced team ensures efficient, cost-effective solutions tailored to your needs. "“Demand constantly outstripped supply growth month by month” in 2024, according to McKinsey data, and the lack of capacity available in the market it set to be one of the biggest threats to the industry’s growth in the coming years. There is, already, a depleted fleet, and 31% of available freighters are “grandparents” at 30 years and older." #airfreight #aircargo #shipping #capacity

Air Cargo Soars: 2024 Growth and Challenges Air cargo capacity experienced significant growth last year, with double-digit percentage increases, driven by a recovery in bellyhold capacity and sustained high levels of freighter space compared to pre-Covid benchmarks. According to data provider and consultant Rotate, total air cargo capacity in 2024, measured in airfreight tonne kilometers (ATKs), rose by 10% year-on-year to reach 442 billion ATKs. This growth was primarily fueled by the resurgence of passenger services, leading to a 13% year-on-year increase in bellyhold capacity, which is now just 1% shy of pre-Covid 2019 levels. Freighter capacity also grew by 8% year-on-year in 2024, reflecting the industry’s […]

Talking about Air Freighters, Air freighters, also known as cargo planes or freight aircraft, are specialized aircraft designed to transport goods and products by air. These aircraft are typically larger and have a higher cargo capacity than passenger planes, allowing for the transportation of various types of cargo including oversized, dangerous, or perishable items. The operational characteristics of air freighters depend on the specific type of aircraft and its intended use:- 1. Cargo space: Air freighters have a large cargo hold or bay specially designed to accommodate various types of cargo. The cargo space can range from a few thousand cubic feet to over 20,000 cubic feet, depending on the size and type of aircraft. 2. Loading and unloading: Air freighters are equipped with specialized loading and unloading systems such as cranes, rollers, and forklifts to efficiently load and unload cargo. 3. Freight capacity: The maximum weight and volume of cargo that an air freighter can transport are determined by its size and payload capacity. Larger freighters can carry more cargo, while smaller ones are limited in their capacity. 4. Range and fuel efficiency: Air freighters are designed for long-range flights and can travel thousands of miles without refueling. They are also designed to be fuel-efficient, allowing for cost-effective operations. 5. Speed: As cargo planes are not limited by passenger schedules, they can often fly at faster speeds than passenger planes, reducing transit time and increasing efficiency. 6. Specialized equipment: Air freighters may have specialized equipment installed to handle specific types of cargo, such as refrigeration units for perishable goods or specialized containers for hazardous materials. 7. Crew: Cargo planes typically have a smaller crew than passenger planes, consisting of pilots and a few ground staff to handle cargo loading and unloading. Overall, air freighters are designed and operated to transport cargo quickly and efficiently, making them essential for international trade and the global economy. #Airport #Airline #Partnership #AviationIndustry #Freighters #AviationOasis

US air traffic control (ATC) restrictions due to a shortage of controllers are impacting aviation expansion. With air cargo demand (and rates) already elevated, there is fear of a long term impact on air freight capacity. Most impacted right now are commercial flights, but off-peak takeoffs and landings of passenger planes affect carriers’ freighters which are generally given lower priority. United CEO Scott Kirby isn’t expecting a speedy fix, predicting years-long controller scarcity at a recent industry event. #thefreightarchitects #jaguarfreight #logistics

Have to wonder if all the recent learnings in legacy civil aviation are a sign that it's over stretched and supply chain is struggling with "optimisations" and "efficiencies" imposed on it. Short haul flight prices have been on a race to the bottom for a long time and it feels like we're now seeing the impact of that price trend.

🚀 2024 Air Cargo Capacity Review 🚀 2024 marked a remarkable year for the air cargo industry, with total capacity rising by 10% to 442 billion airfreight tonne kilometers (ATK). The recovery of passenger services significantly contributed to this growth, as bellyhold capacity increased by 13%, now just 1% below pre-COVID levels. Freighter capacity also saw an 8% rise, reflecting a strong reliance on all-cargo aircraft. Key trade routes from Asia experienced substantial demand, particularly driven by e-commerce growth. However, as we look ahead to 2025, the market presents a more complex landscape. At Mercury ULD, we encourage everyone to stay agile and ready to adapt to the evolving market conditions. Let’s prepare for the complexities ahead! 🌍✈️ #MercuryULD #AirCargo #ULDLeasing #Ecommerce #Logistics
