These images show the Labyrinth, Graubner Pavilion and Cafeteria at Museum Insel Hombroich. Hard to believe they’re nearly 40 years old—they still look as fresh and modern as ever. It’s clear that hollow sections never go out of style :) Building with structural hollow sections offers many benefits, including: 𝗟𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: The closed form prevents dirt buildup, keeping the structure clean. 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: With a smaller contact surface than open sections, coating costs are reduced. In England, it is not uncommon to see "wavy" brick walls. Interestingly, the design uses fewer bricks than a straight wall. A straight wall that is just one brick thick is not sturdy enough to stand alone & can be easily toppled, so they generally have a thickness of at least two or more layers of bricks, & are also reinforced at regular intervals with vertical posts serving as buttresses. But a wavy "one-brick" wall stands just fine on its own due to the arch support provided by its shape, which combines both wall & buttress. When designing installations for buildings with rich history and character, I draw inspiration from the architecture itself, ensuring that the artistic vision harmonises with the client’s needs. For this project, the creative challenge was to transform the entrance space into something exciting. The natural inspiration came from the spiral staircase within the disused chimney stack, channeling its energy flow into the foundation of our new artistic installation. The installation mirrors the staircase’s unique structure, integrating dynamic, digitally controlled lighting that pulses in colorful waves, echoing the flow of people throughout the building.
