To find true fulfillment in a career, one must consider the whole picture and the whole person. This includes personality, intrinsic interests, and values (including money). Finding careers that align with passions and values sets people up for fulfilling lives. Who can help you with your salary? 🔍 🔑 We often need to pay more attention to the expertise of industry-focused recruiters. They talk daily with people doing the same role in different organizations. If someone knows the average salary of your role I bet it will be them. But can we use that expertise on the business side as well? Of course! We're now in the period where most budgets for next year are being set. The budget for your workforce is one of the most essential. There are lots of factors that go into why one chooses a job - pay, benefits, leadership, the company's mission and goals, and much more. At the end of the day, money matters. Point blank. Today I was sent an interest letter for the Assistant Director of Study Abroad and International Student Services position at a central Texas university. The budgeted salary for the position was $38,000 and the requirements and responsibilities were plentiful. $38,000?! Completely absurd. This is why they'll have trouble filling the position and retaining someone. It's just really not okay. Education needs to do better. Financial value is essential. Last week's job report shows how some of the lowest-earning, most marginalized workers are making progress in today's labor market. But it's still important to take a step back and see how far some, like those without a college education, have to go to catch up. In a new report, I show how the types of jobs people work is increasingly separated by their level of education. Workers without a college degree are being left out of professional occupations, and are increasingly working lower-paying service jobs. In 1992, non-college workers were well represented in middle-paying production, clerical, and operative occupations. But over 30 years, their employment in these have dropped by the millions. At the same time, the number working transportation and service jobs barreled upwards. Unfortunately, these types of jobs pay less and offer fewer benefits compared to other occupations. Under 40% of service jobs offer medical and retirement benefits. On the other hand, over 80% of professional jobs do. The takeaway is that the population of non-college workers is, on average, lower paid and lower compensated relative to the rest of the workforce than they were 30 years ago. Dear Employers--But Especially Giving the Mom Glare to Higher Ed/Student Affairs Institutions: PUT THE SALARY RANGE IN THE POSTING!!!! Yes, I am shouting. and no, I don't care if you think I'm rude. I think YOU'RE rude if you play "hide the salary" until you've wasted both your own time and good candidates' time by not putting it out there upfront. And this goes for every position. Recently, on my campus (though not my institution--maybe you've heard about the big divorce at IUPUI), positions were talked about here and only the executive-ish jobs had the salary range in the posting. I actually had to ask the person who posted them "what's the salary range for the entry level jobs?" I'm not applying for the jobs myself so it was not a big deal for me to put that out there. But no one should HAVE to ask. If you are ashamed of how poorly you pay people, then maybe fix that if you can. Or offer something else (flexibility, conference attendance, tuition benefit, more remote work opportunities, relaxed dress code) that might make someone say, "OK, this is a good job for me right now and I'll give it my best every day that I am there." Get with the program, please.

I am often surprised by the disparity between the educational requirements companies set and the compensation they offer. It seems incongruous for roles that demand significant academic investment—such as a bachelor's or associate's degree—to offer wages that are relatively low. This discrepancy raises concerns about fairness and the value placed on education in the job market. It may be worth revisiting compensation structures to better align with the qualifications required for these positions.
