A little less than 2 years ago a store manager on my team lost her battle to cancer. Jenn was a ray of sunshine to all those who knew her. ☀️ Yesterday I was doing an interview for a different district team. During the interview it came out that this candidate many years ago was hired by Jenn. She shared how way back then as she applied for a seasonal sales associate Jenn made her feel so special. The candidate shared how Jenn as her leader said words like “I see something special in you” “you have so much potential” those words made a lasting impression on her. This candidate said how she thought of those words and how Jenn made her feel. Hoping Jenn would be proud as she is now years later interviewing for a Store Manager position. This was such a beautiful moment and I was so grateful that this candidate shared this with me. This moment has made me pause and reflect on how….every day we are leaving our legacy with those we lead and interact with. 💙 There is power in how we use our words. 💙 There is power in how we invest in people. 💙 There is power in being kind. 💙 There is also power in how clear we are as we coach people to reach their potential 💗We have a opportunity every day to make a difference in someone’s life. I know personally this was a reminder to not waste a single opportunity to smile and make someone’s day. #ginghamnation #oneteam #leader #leadership #empower #kindness #legacy #retail

National Safety Month: There Goes My Hero… ...He’s ordinary. Hero - (noun) a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Following up on my tales from the road, I thought a lot about how, at different times, I have wanted to be a superman who could fix everything on my own. However, real progress is made through earning buy-in by working as a team, communicating, and following through on feedback. My Heroes When I think about the store managers who are my heroes, they are not polished individuals with college degrees, lecturing their employees about things they read in books. Instead, they are the ones who lead by example and through practical, hands-on guidance. A hero is the store manager who, on an associate's first day, walks them around the store and stops to pick up a pallet off the floor, teaching the new associate to pay attention to their surroundings in a hands-on way. A hero is the store manager who eases their associate into only pulling products off the first rung of shelves until they are more comfortable on the forklift. A hero is the store manager who gives daily recognition to their team members when they make a safe choice. Over the years, I have spent a lot of time examining our internal numbers, including safety metrics and sales figures. What I have found is that management that paints themselves as superhuman, capable of carrying a store on their backs, may achieve temporary success. However, this house of cards eventually falls when they encounter something too heavy for "Superman" to lift. The store managers who achieve long-term success aren't superhumans; they are task-oriented individuals who execute. They embrace our processes, teach the concept of teamwork, and have a passion for growth, both for themselves and their teams. Call to Action Let's take a moment to recognize and appreciate the everyday heroes among us. Encourage and support those who lead by example and foster a culture of safety, teamwork, and growth in our workplaces. Together, like Bowie said, "We can be heroes." #RKTalent #SafetyMonth #Heroes *** I invite you to thank a hero leader you have had in the comments *** Epilogue Saving most of the video I shot for internal training ( ⚠ #TradeSecrets ⚠ ) but for a fun dichotomy of this post, the attached video is some of the best answers I heard about having a safety superpower. I kept my laugh in the background of the last clip.

They Taught Me Thursday 🙏 I vividly remember sitting in a diner booth in June 2013 out in Las Vegas, New Mexico. A Store Manager at the time, one who was geeked out to be a part of our Company’s District Team Leader Program, I had been challenged to go out West for a single week each month & assist with recruiting in some of our newer Hibbett markets. Some trips were solo, others, had the incredible opportunity to be partnered with a training mentor. Insert: Greg Sherrell. There in a Las Vegas, NM restaurant, Greg & I sat. What was particularly memorable about this meal was that as we talked, locals walked from table to table trying to sell their handmade items. Bracelets, rings, scarves, bags, cowboy belts & buckles, we saw it all. No, I didn’t have any cash on me, only my debt card, but even if I did, I wasn’t buying. Why? Because I was already buying something more valuable: the meaningful career wisdom & guidance of Greg Sherrell; the only difference being that unlike the buyable items rotating around the room (…or the food on the menu), what Greg offered was: priceless. What was some of the insight shared that evening? How to hand out a business card ✅; how to deal with being told, “not interested.” ✅; how to follow-up call someone you attempted to recruit ✅; how to answer important questions about pay, hours, & benefits ✅; & how to maximize return on investment. ✅ For all these things & more, Greg has left an undeniable mark on my journey. I suppose you can say that he puts the ‘Share’ in Sherrell, always spreading knowledge, wisdom, & compassion to and for others. 🫶 Thank you, Greg! 🫡 #theytaughtmethursday #hibbett #citygear ‘They Taught Me Thursday’ is a collection series of reflections upon pivotal leaders from my career. There is no rank order, only an abundance of them! Read more on Instagram @geartownbrown 😊
