Gun violence in America is a public health crisis. A recent analysis of CDC data by KFF shows that firearm injuries have been the leading cause of death among children and teens (ages 1-19) for three consecutive years. Today, at Northwell Health's Gun Violence Prevention Forum, we announced a groundbreaking new initiative to treat it as such, in collaboration with a broad coalition of leading health systems and hospitals. This initiative will pair impactful awareness campaigns with community outreach and advocacy efforts to address the multifaceted challenges posed by gun violence in our communities. Through this work, we aim to elevate the issue of gun violence in America and its impact on youth, shifting away from divisive, politically charged conversations to those focused on public health approaches that have proven effective in combating this epidemic. With data-driven strategies and expert insights, the campaign will provide people throughout the country with a deeper understanding of the individual actions both gun owners and non-gun owners can take in their homes and communities to protect our nation’s youth and save lives. #TranformingCare: How Health Care Providers Can Respond to Gun Violence Funding from the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and Medicaid, as well as new research and technical support, are encouraging more healthcare delivery systems to pursue efforts to curb gun violence. With the passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, more health systems are expected to follow suit. The law allocates $250 million for community violence interruption programs that adopt a public health approach to reducing gun violence. It also provides $750 million for crisis response services, including implementation of extreme-risk protection orders. Several new organizations have been established to provide technical support to hospitals engaged in this work, among them the Northwell Health Center for Gun Violence Prevention and Kaiser Permanente’s Center for Gun Violence Research and Education, which is co-led by The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention. These centers also fund research to build the evidence base for effectively engaging the highest-need patients in clinical and community settings. “The center has a very explicit health equity focus,” says Fatimah Loren Dreier, M.B.A., executive director of the HAVI. “We also care very much about education initiatives. How do we clinicians, as well as public health professionals, understand violence as a health issue and change narratives about violence in this country?” The Kaiser Permanente Center for Gun Violence Research and Education, coordinated through a partnership with the HAVI, offers grants to build the evidence base of what works, with researchers working closely with community partners. https://lnkd.in/eWSt2-aZ #CVI #PublicHealth #HVIPs

#InTheNews: Experts, government outline healthcare strategies for gun violence prevention at Northwell's annual forum Providers, researchers and government officials gathered Tuesday to discuss the "urgent public health crisis" of gun violence and throw their weight behind a new multimillion-dollar awareness campaign. The event, held in New York City and hosted by Northwell Health, drew big crowds in person and online, and even former President Bill Clinton, who delivered a keynote address. “You can make a difference," Clinton told the audience. “You have to save the lives you can and make the progress you can and keep hoping that one day, there will be a significant breakthrough on this issue." The Ad Council, a nonprofit focused on public service advertising, announced at the forum it would be spearheading a new national awareness campaign, funded by hospitals and health systems, to address gun violence and its impact on youth. The effort is being funded by members of the National Health Care CEO Council on Gun Violence Prevention and Safety. That group, formed in 2022, now includes more than 50 executives of some of the largest hospitals and health systems in the U.S. They have pledged $10 million to the Ad Council campaign, which hopes to raise $40 million over the next two years. On June 25th, the Surgeon General issued an urgent advisory, declaring firearm violence a public health crisis—one that affects individuals, families, and communities across the nation. In 2022 alone, firearm violence claimed over 48,000 lives in the U.S., with nearly 132 people dying each day. An additional 100,000 survivors were wounded, many facing long-term physical and mental health challenges. Nearly 54% of adults report that they or their family members have experienced gun-related violence. Cities are at the forefront of addressing this crisis by leading with innovation and evidence-based strategies. The Surgeon General’s Advisory offers a public health framework that cities can use to tackle gun violence head-on. Key Approaches for Cities: 🔹 Data and Communication: Cities can use clear data to target impactful strategies and collaborate with universities to enhance public safety measures. 🔹 Community Risk Reduction: Implementing violence prevention and intervention strategies in partnership with local organizations is crucial. 🔹 Firearm Risk Reduction: Policy actions and programs like safe storage campaigns can mitigate gun violence risks. 🔹 Mental Health Support: Providing affordable, high-quality mental health services is essential, especially in communities disproportionately affected by gun violence. According to the CDC, in 2021 54% of all gun-related deaths in the U.S. were suicides (~26,300 deaths) while 43% were murders. When we talk about gun violence, we have to talk about suicide prevention. What is suicide prevention? Job Security is suicide prevention Economic stability is suicide prevention Safe and Affordable housing is suicide prevention Affordable childcare is suicide prevention Food security is suicide prevention Accessible and affordable healthcare is suicide prevention Youth mentorship is suicide prevention Quality education is suicide prevention Access to quality mental health services is suicide prevention.

I love this job and certainly love what it does and all it represents. However, it is a "sad" necessity....that's getting worse. That is what fuels my passion for what we do.
