💡 The Power of Perspective: Centering Equity in Problem Framing Practices
It’s frustrating to see the same old story play out: minority groups are underrepresented in clinical trials, and the proposed solution is usually some variation of “let’s translate our materials and do more outreach.” Seriously in 2024?
This problem isn’t just about language barriers or lack of awareness. It runs much deeper, touching on historical injustices, systemic inequities, and a fundamental lack of trust.
Whenever the topic of minority underrepresentation in clinical trials comes up, the conversation often zeroes in on recruitment difficulties. The solutions offered typically involve translating materials into different languages or increasing community outreach. These efforts barely scratch the surface of the real problem.
The question we need to be asking is:
👉🏽 Why do researchers and institutions struggle to gain the trust and participation of minority groups in clinical trials?
👉🏽 What are the historical, social, and systemic barriers that discourage or prevent their participation?
👉🏽 How have past and present inequalities shaped their trust (or lack thereof) in medical research?
Trust is critical here. Researchers and institutions must actively work to build and maintain trust with minority communities and work on themselves to be trustworthy. This goes beyond just outreach, it requires a commitment to ethical practices, transparency, and accountability.
Researchers and institutions have a crucial role in reframing this issue. It starts with recognising the historical and systemic factors at play and actively working to address them. This includes building genuine partnerships with communities, involving them in the research process from the beginning, and ensuring that research agendas reflect their needs and concerns. Demonstrating trustworthiness through consistent, ethical, and transparent practices is essential in this process.
Centering equity in problem framing isn’t just about increasing minority participation in clinical trials, it’s about transforming the entire research ecosystem to be more inclusive, just, and representative. It’s about recognising and addressing the power dynamics and historical injustices that have shaped current practices.
What do you think are the most critical steps researchers and institutions can take to build trust and ensure greater equity in clinical trials?
