The global public health community has made incredible gains over the last 50 years. But due to climate change, many of those gains are now at risk—unless we invest in adaptation, and soon. A new report by McKinsey Health Institute—“Health-related climate adaptation: How to innovate and scale global action for local needs”—lays out the scope of the challenges posed to human health by shifting weather patterns and extreme weather events. We need to adapt, and do so quickly. We’ll need new medtech that can keep people cool in heat waves; better surveillance systems to predict floods, fires, and the spread of disease; and more resilient healthcare supply chains that can respond to climate-induced shocks. It sounds great in theory, but what will it cost? Taken together, the price tag is steep—the report identifies an annual shortfall of investment in adaptation in health systems globally between $26 billion and $56 billion. However, the price of inaction is almost always higher, and our authors see a way forward if global public health players, financial institutions, and governments work together to unlock private sector investments. This effort will take everyone working in concert, and I’m proud that we’re doing our part. In addition to our more than 1,700 sustainability engagements last year alone, we are working across more than 50 countries on global public health work, including pandemic preparedness, epidemiology modeling, healthcare supply chain optimization, the future of public health agencies, and more. Together we’ve achieved a lot. Let’s not go backwards. Many thanks to Claudia von Hammerstein, Hemant Ahlawat, Matthew Craven, Matt Wilson, Oliver Walker, and more for making this research happen.
