Do you know what a maternity care desert is? Here is something that we learned with our work in birth centers: - More than 2 million women of childbearing age live in maternity care deserts (1,052 counties) that have no hospital offering obstetric care, no birth center and no obstetric provider. - Almost 130,000 babies were born in maternity care deserts. - An additional 3.5 million women of childbearing age live in counties with limited access to maternity care. CEO Grow Midwives, LLC; March for Moms, Founding President/Board Member; Past President ACNM; Editor Top Selling Book, 2nd Ed., Nobody Told Me About That: Surviving and Thriving Through the Early Weeks of Parenting
But the conclusions state, “consensus around one operational definition is needed…” “Evidence is lacking on effectiveness of strategies to implement RMC to improve ANY maternal infant outcomes…” Seriously? Respectful care requires those providing care to use their professions ethical principles, concepts taught in training. What needs to happen is for systems to hold providers accountable for lack of provision of respectful care. Can we invest money in the legal underpinnings of disrespectful care and consequences that follow?

Please see my thoughts below on the findings on consent published by Birth Trauma Association (UK) ⬇️ #maternalbirthtrauma #medicalnegligence

✨Bohren and colleagues (2020) proposed respectful maternity care (#RMC) in professional practice as a solution to the widespread and global mistreatment, disrespect, and abuse in maternity care systems. 💢Love this solution, though you gotta know that I'm calling the problem what it is -- obstetric violence.💢 ✨There is universal recognition that the successful provision of #respectfulmaternitycare also requires health facilities and health systems to be structured in a way that supports and respects all types of maternity care providers so that policies and workflow are aligned with making RMC achievable.
