Researching infrastructure planning for an uncertain future at ETH Zürich, Chair of Infrastructure Management
Planning infrastructure is one of the most critical challenges of our time. Whether it's building renewable energy infrastructure to meet net-zero objectives ♻ or modifying transport networks to make our daily commutes better 🚆 , it feels like a universal truth: The projects seem to take longer than expected. ⏲ I will be in Lübeck on April 18-19 to talk about our approach to trade off planning time and societal value for long-duration large infrastructure projects. Central to this is the concept of responsiveness - the ability of planning processes to accommodate societal needs quickly. Write me if you're going to be there! ✍

Mobility hubs are often presented as the solution for enhanced accessibility, a shift towards sustainable mobility and/or improved public space. Sometimes, they seem to be a goal in itself. In Delft University of Technology’s (ongoing) research, they try to find out how to achieve the mobility, spatial and societal goals by investigating and modelling the potential users and their needs, and the required modes and facilities to offer accordingly. The members of the FVV Board recently met in Frankfurt to discuss and approve the proposals submitted for the new research programme following the 2024 Spring Transfer + Networking Event. These include some interesting new research work: 💡A new orientation study addresses the question of how quickly the European #energy system can become GHG-neutral across technologies and sectors (e.g. #transport, #industry, households) while minimising cumulative greenhouse gas emissions. The project will start in July 2024 and results are expected by the end of 2025. 🚗🚛 Another research project is looking at life-cycle modelling and evaluation for the optimised design of #powertrain systems in passenger cars and commercial vehicles. The aim of this work is to extend the ›HyFlex-ICE‹ project with regard to the life-cycle-optimised design of mobile propulsion systems making both a first step towards methodically structuring the so far mainly unregulated subject area of #LCA of mobile propulsion systems and making it usable for vehicle concept assessment. 💡 The MATRICS research project is investigating MIMO and #AI-based operating strategies for thermal management systems of electrified and electric vehicles. 🚢 Another research project based on ›CCS on Ships‹ is committed to demonstrate CO2 value chains with innovative carbon capture technologies on a new versatile demonstration platform for exhaust gases from combustion engines and gas turbines. The new research programme underlines the forward-looking nature of our research and our determination to support industry in creating forward-thinking technology solutions. #science #innovation #MakeItNew #industrymatters #wearetransfer Markus Schwaderlapp Christopher Steinwachs Burkhard Göschel Prof. Dr.-Ing. 🔸Inspiration from peers: Urban Logistics and Mobility🔸 Last week we joined the one-day seminar on “Urban Logistics and Mobility” organized by NGB (part of VVSOR) and LNMB in Soesterberg. This seminar is aimed at both practitioners and academics who are interested in the latest developments in OR (Operations Research). Aside from an interesting program, the seminar offers an excellent opportunity to learn from peers in the Dutch OR community. It is always exciting to gain new insights through a mix of presentations from both the business community (Albert Heijn, TNO and University Medical Center Groningen) and presentations on research in the field of urban logistics by professors from various international universities. Especially because we recently saw in one of our projects that distinguishing between route planning in urban and rural areas can yield major savings. Check the VVSOR website for more details about the topics discussed during the individual presentations: https://lnkd.in/eTgAauFt We would like to continue to learn from our peers. Which conference or seminar in the field of logistics applications or Operations Research should we consider attending? #ACTLytics #Ijsselstein #VVSOR #NGB #Urbanlogistics #mobility #seminar #congres #operationsresearch
