Seeking some career guidance to kick off your day? 🚀 At COWI, 'co-creation' is one of our core values. We are dedicated to the power of collaboration and active community engagement within our industry. One of our industry experts deeply engaged in civil engineering, tunneling and the trenchless sector, Steven Kramer, PE, FASCE, shares why participation means more than just giving back—it represents driving progress, fostering innovation, and leading change. Active engagement in engineering organizations at local or national levels offers many opportunities to advance your career. Whether through committee service, university volunteering, or leading industry discussions, every action helps shape our future. Steven began his professional journey in industry associations such as the American Society of Civil Engineers, starting with authoring papers on trenchless technology, then moving on to committee work, and eventually taking on influential board positions. The journey required extra time and dedication, however, the knowledge gained, friendships forged, and leadership skills developed proved invaluable. Get involved and stay involved. Whether you are at the start of your professional journey or an experienced engineer working on advanced projects, your experience could revolutionize industry practices, inspire your peers, and mentor the next generation. ✨ To learn more read this highly inspiring article by Steven Kramer 👇 https://lnkd.in/dBzbeXzJ #EngineeringExcellence #ProfessionalDevelopment #IndustryLeadership

Head of Civil Engineering SBB ¦ Civil engineer with a focus on economic efficiency and organisational development (EMBA HSG)
It was once again a very interesting UIC Meeting of Panel of Structural Experts in Paris with numerous infrastructure managers from Europe. First-hand updates on ongoing innovation projects, developments in standardisation at the UIC and CEN offered great added value. I took the opportunity to thank my colleagues for their much-appreciated contribution to the benchmark on Knowledge Management & Leadership. I conducted the benchmark to answer the question "How much expertise do infrastructure operators need and how can this expertise be secured in the long term?" Here my conclusion: 1) Knowledge management does not stop at the company's boundaries; external factors such as gap of skilled employees and availability of training programmes must also be taken into account. 2) A high level of externalisation at infrastructure operators creates the risk that knowledge will be lost and the necessary skills can no longer be covered. 3) In-house expertise and resources are required to build new engineering structures safely and efficiently and to be able to use existing engineering structures as long and efficiently as possible. 4) Knowledge management methods will only be successful if there is an open culture of information and knowledge sharing. This requires a maximally pronounced transformational leadership culture and a moderately pronounced transactional culture. Many thanks Didier Van de Velde, Ronald van der Zwan, Andrea Vecchi, Durot Frédéric and others. #UIC PoSE, #SBB

I am delighted to announce that my team (Ellis Smith Ethan Egerton Theo Kinder Thomas Gill) and I have been nominated for “Outstanding Solution Idea” with the Common Mission Project UK !!! Context: In the first term of my final-year at university, I completed a module called Complex Problem Solving under Gail Ollis. The objective was to take a current issue that the UK Ministry of Defence were suffering from, and create a minimum viable product to alleviate this. After a rocky start, we eventually had to switch ideas after two weeks where we met James Robert Fawcett MBE BSc (Hons) FCIEH CEnvH LFOH AFPH. He introduced us to the Defense Infrastructure Organisation and their issue of retaining environmental health reports from local authorities. These reports are generated whenever a local authority inspects a military kitchen to assess its suitability. The issue was that local authorities weren’t obliged to send these reports to the DIO, which were needed for them to actually improve the infrastructure of these military kitchens. Instead, they were sent to and kept by the contractors of the military kitchens (Most, if not all, military kitchens are operated by an external contractor). We came up with both a long-term and short-term solution: Long-term: Add a contract addition to the contracts of the contractors that forces them to send a copy of these reports to the DIO. This would be added when these contracts are up for renewal. Short-term: Add some extra unassured guidance into the primary authority register (these are guidelines that instructs how a local authority should assess the kitchen) to instruct local authorities to also send a copy to the DIO. Again, we are very delighted to be nominated for this, thanks to our problem sponsor James Robert Fawcett MBE BSc (Hons) FCIEH CEnvH LFOH AFPH and our module co-ordinator Gail Ollis for help along the way.
