“53% of giving circle members reported that being part of collective giving improved their ability to have constructive conversations with differing viewpoints, demonstrating how these groups foster open dialogue and civic engagement. By changing how we give to be in collectives, we can also mend the very social fabric of our country.” Earlier this month in Fortune, Sara Lomelin shared promising findings from the latest collective giving report produced in partnership with the Johnson Center, Philanthropy Together, and Colmena Consulting. “For the first time in history, women are on the verge of controlling the majority of personal wealth.” Fortune's article covers the impending transfer of wealth to women which is projected to reach $30 trillion in the next decade. Perhaps more significant than the amount transferred, is how the wealth will be directed. I'm particularly interested in the notion of “giving circles”, a philanthropy model where a group of people, varying from a dozen to a few hundred, pool their donations and make a collective decision on the causes it supports. Research supports the effectiveness of such groups, with 53% of giving circle members reporting that being part of a collective giving improved their ability to have constructive conversations with differing viewpoints, demonstrating how these groups promote honest dialogue. I like the presence of collaboration in giving circles and think it links well to moonshot philanthropy beliefs around the importance of collaborating to achieve big ideas. By coming together, we find intriguing perspectives and are challenged to see the world outside of our personal experience. #GivingCircles #Philanthropy #MoonshotPhilanthropy https://lnkd.in/gRPnY-US

I've been jumping into the world of Giving Circles since starting the WELA Giving Circle a year ago and this new report from Philanthropy Together really puts the spotlight (and the data to go with it) on why they are the future of fundraising. Amazing work Sara Lomelin and team! Some takeaways - Between 2017 and 2023, nearly 4,000 collective giving groups mobilized approximately 370,000 philanthropists to donate more than $3.1 billion. - Giving Circles are on a trajectory to double in the next 5 years. - Collective Giving Groups are overwhelmingly led by women. A throughline of collective giving research is the critical role that women play in the movement. Among group leaders, 84% reported that more than half of their membership consisted of women: with 60% of groups entirely composed of women, female leadership is an integral aspect of more than half of all groups. - Collective giving is actively shifting the narrative around who is considered a “philanthropist.” - Collective giving changes what counts as “giving,” harnessing all 5Ts - Time, Talent, Treasure, Testimony, and Ties . - Collective Giving Deeply Impacts Members Themselves - improving member health and wellbeing through giving, fostering belonging, purpose, and connection to community and enhancing professional networks. https://lnkd.in/gD2gDqX3

Women are critical to the fate and health of democracy globally. By lifting up women-led organizations, philanthropy can help them unleash their full potential to create authentic, transformative change. I learned years ago from Cdn Women’s Foundation that when you help a woman, there is a ripple effect. Women will then help their families and communities. https://lnkd.in/gKzfit76

What can we learn about embedding feminist principles in grant-making? That long, elaborate and time-consuming grant applications and reporting forms can be evolved to serve both grantees and donors. Today, we have many foundations and private funders that insist on lengthy application and reporting forms which perpetuate the inequity in the sector. Many grassroots and volunteer-run organizations do not have the resources to engage in these time-consuming processes yet they require funds to advance their work. It's a difficult and exhausting experience for them to continually decide where to invest their limited efforts. This article shares some ideas on how funders can co-create equitable granting processes. #philanthropy https://lnkd.in/g8G4TsGB

There have been a lot of articles and conversations debating the merits of Trust-Based Philanthropy recently, mostly requiring proponents of a trust-based approach to funding to repeatedly remind it's detractors of what trust-based philanthropy really is (Yes, there is still accountability! Yes, there is still a focus on evidence!). It's refreshing to read this article focusing on how we can go beyond trust-based philanthropy! Trust-based philanthropy is a great start, but how can we do even better? ''The Ms. Foundation report argues that while implementing trust-based philanthropic practices is “an excellent starting point” to reshape the unequal power dynamics between funders and nonprofits, it is simply not enough. That's where care-based philanthropy comes into play. “Care requires us to consider the unique needs and experiences of historically excluded communities, particularly women and nonbinary people of color, who bear the brunt of systemic racial and gendered oppression. It means investing in their healing, wellbeing, safety and survival,” the report states. [...] The report adds that through care, funders can “forge a more just and equitable future, where philanthropy's resources are channeled more effectively to support and sustain the communities that need it most” by continuing to embrace trust-based practices while “embarking on a radical transformation rooted in care.”'' #trustbasedphilanthropy #funding #philanthropy #care #carebasedphilanthropy #genderequality #womenandgirls #womensleadership #LGBTQIAleadership #BIPOCleadership #nonbinaryleadership

There is a significant gap in philanthropic funding for feminist activists in the United States. Even though women and girls make up more than half of the country's population, less than 2% of philanthropic funding goes to organizations serving them. At Urgent Action Fund for Feminist Activism, we mobilize resources to women, trans, and non-binary activists who are at risk and aim to protect their rights. We call on other funders to act now and get more resources to feminists who are moving the needle on some of the most pressing social justice issues of our time. https://lnkd.in/gRv-4rPm

Collective giving circles, primarily led by women and focusing on local, community-based support, are redefining philanthropy, as per Axios. This movement, highlighted in Philanthropy Together's latest report, has seen explosive growth, with the number of circles and members tripling twice over the past decade. With over $3 billion distributed in five years, these circles prioritize inclusive, trust-based philanthropy over traditional metrics. At Gudsy our mission is to expand this space by making it easier for individuals to join forces, democratizing philanthropy further. By enhancing connectivity, streamline decision-making, and broaden the reach of collective giving, empowering more people to contribute to meaningful change. #Philanthropy #CollectiveGiving #Gudsy https://lnkd.in/eVtn5mWj

Make way for the next generation of philanthropists. As affluence grows, so does the imperative for giving back. Across the globe, there’s a growing movement in affluent families dedicating their time, and money, to furthering different causes. But the face of philanthropy is changing. The number of women philanthropists is rising, and the next generation of wealth holders are starting to get their seat at the table of the family business, the first order of business being philanthropy. Not only is the face of philanthropy changing but so is the role that philanthropic initiatives play in financial planning. Siloed approaches to philanthropy vs. investment decisions are becoming a thing of the past, clients now want the entire spectrum of their wealth planning to be reflective of their goals. Here, J.P. Morgan's senior philanthropy advisor Olivia Jenkins talks us through the changing face of philanthropy, what the new generation of looks like and the rise of female philanthropists. https://lnkd.in/gBbT4Hmd #TempusMagazine #JPMorgan #philanthropy #philanthropists #womeninbusiness #VantageMedia #publishing
