A new case study highlights the importance of disaggregated data practices, particularly in the context of public health responses like the COVID-19 pandemic, illustrating how a lack of demographic data before the pandemic hindered effective preparation and response, especially among communities facing disproportionate impacts. This case study was developed as part of our “Do You See Us?” campaign to encourage all state agencies in Michigan to adopt uniform #race and #ethnicity #data collection standards. Our own Karen Hoekstra and Tory Martin spoke with AP News reporter Kaitlyn Huamani about the rise of “kindness influencers” — digital content creators whose charitable stunts garner millions of monetized views on platforms like #YouTube and #TikTok. Many in the philanthropic sector view the work of these creators — who aren't held to the same standards and regulations as traditional nonprofits — as, at best, performative, and at worst, exploitative. Philanthropists have long maintained that they are willing and able to take risks that neither the private sector nor government can. But how many risks do we really take? And how do we manage those risks? On November 14, join us for Grantmaker Risk Management, a virtual workshop that introduces a trust-based risk tolerance/management framework that both honors the grant partnership and leads to increased impact. Together, we'll explore the different types of risk and their impact on programming and funding decisions, discover how a growth mindset, collaborative problem-solving, and innovative strategies can be used within the context of the foundation to identify and mitigate risk, and more. It illustrates how a lack of demographic data before the pandemic hindered effective preparation and response, especially among communities facing disproportionate impacts. Layton. "The bad news is that funding for those efforts has remained stagnant.” According to the 2022 report from Candid and the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, resilience and preparedness funding accounts for just 2% of total grantmaking.
