Helping nonprofit leaders to save the world by curating a Board of Directors that will drive impact, financial stability, and long-term sustainability
Many nonprofits exist to improve the lives of women, children and other disadvantaged groups. For me, this is exactly why it's so important to have women at the table where decisions are being made. Similarly, having a board that includes at least some representation of the people the organization serves can be really powerful. At Athena, I work with nonprofits of varying sizes - rather than entering into a binary gender debate, I believe we need to focus on fostering collaboration and inclusivity to drive meaningful change. So how do we empower more women to ascend the career ladder to executive roles in larger nonprofits, while encouraging men to address the issues affecting their direct communities?

More women work in nonprofits; so why do men end up leading them? This is the title of a necessary article that Harvard Business Review just put out. It is easy to see that the nonprofit and NGO workspace - at least in Europe and the USA - is heavily women-dominated. And anecdotally, I have watched the manager and leadership ranks becoming more populated by women over the last 10 years or so. But -- also anecdotally -- I noticed how the large CSOs tend to be an exception to this trend. This important article, by Cathleen Clerkin, PhD at Candid, the US data clearing house (among others) for nonprofits, offers us the numbers. These indicate that my gut-sense was right. Happy International Women's Day! I sometimes take it for granted that I work for a company not only owned by a woman but full of amazing women in roles across the business... and our gender pay gap is smaller than most businesses in our size and sector! I'm envisioning a future where it is the norm that businesses pay women the same as men but let's not stop there... How great would it be if all organisations offered flexible working policies that shifted the burden of unpaid domestic work away from women and shared it equally between genders? Investing in women and gender-diverse people is something we actively do every day at GOOD TO BE GOOD. Not only is it our nonprofit mandate, but we also believe it is a vital long-term solution that benefits everyone. (We’re all interconnected!) Thanks to the support and allyship from partners like Co-operators, one of the ways we invest in our priority communities is by promoting experiences and spaces for them to engage in economic capacity building. With efforts like our “Change Make-Her program,” we know that when women and gender-diverse people with intersecting identities have access to inclusive training, mentorship, opportunities, and supports, they are empowered to build the thriving lives they deserve. It’s not rocket science: invest in all women, invest in our collective liberation.
