In the United States, there are several major barriers to mental health treatment. Many revolve around the financial aspect, but three out of five of the most substantially reported obstacles actually point to another problem in our industry: lack of the right providers. Patients report that a lack of providers in their area, and the data validates their concerns. The Health Resources and Services Administration reports that 160 million Americans live in federally-designated Mental Health Professional Shortage Areas. This is half our population as a country! Those that do have mental health providers in the area may be faced with a lack of availability. Waitlists can be significant as there aren’t enough professionals to serve the needs of the area. Lastly, the majority of mental health providers are white, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This lack of diversity in the field means that patients of color may not have access to a provider from a similar background, which may discourage them from seeking treatment. These problems can’t be solved overnight, but by embracing a referral network, mental health providers can aid in the effort to make treatment more accessible for all. If a potential patient isn’t the right fit for you, you can refer out to someone who may be a better fit, and vice-versa! Praxi aims to make the referral process simple. 🌟 Collaboration Between Mental Health Trust and Care Homes: A Unique Experience🌟 One unique aspect of my role in Activities working across both mental health facilities at South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust and Signature Senior Lifestyle Limited . Each environment brings its own set of challenges, but I’ve found that certain activities, like storytelling and group games, provide universal benefits regardless of the setting. In mental health hospitals, activities often focus on therapy and structured routines to aid recovery, while in care homes, the goal is often to foster social connections and maintain cognitive function. We adapt our approach by tailoring the intensity and frequency of activities to fit the needs of residents and patients. The difference lies in how we engage—in hospitals, activities may be more clinical and recovery-focused, while in care homes, they’re about enhancing quality of life and supporting emotional well-being. Have you noticed any differences in how mental health is approached in care homes vs hospitals? I’d love to hear your thoughts! #CareHomes #MentalHealthCare #ActivitiesCoordinator #StGeorgesMentalHealth #WellBeing #PatientCare #SignatureSeniorLifestyle

With the rise of mental health platforms like Rula, Headway, Spring Health, and Alma, we see good intentions but significant gaps that many mental health professionals find problematic. BetterHelp, for instance, is widely recognized as having a model that doesn’t serve providers or clients well. Firstly, reimbursement rates remain a major issue. Many providers express concerns about low rates and the challenges of negotiating fees that sustain their practices, often encountering sentiments of “you should be grateful.” Secondly, these platforms still fail to adequately support group practices and associate licenses, which limits access to care. Lastly, slow payment times can cause financial strain on clinicians. While these platforms may have good intentions, they may not be the best solution for therapists or in addressing the mental health crisis in this country. #mentalhealth #technology #healthcare

Screening for BOTH social determinants and perinatal mental health is critical, according to new research. Bridgette E. Blebu, PhD MPH et al.'s study for Health Affairs emphasizes the importance of consistent screening not only for #PerinatalMentalHealth but also for the societal factors influencing these conditions. Needless to say, we agree! The article underscores the need for #policies and #partnerships that enhance screening capacity and provide support that's tailored to the needs of populations affected by #PMAD (perinatal mood and anxiety disorder), #SMI (serious mental illness), and social determinants of #health. Check out the authors' call to extend support beyond traditional healthcare settings below. This philosophy continually influences the approach and scope of Canopie and other vital and non-traditional #DigitalHealth solutions, so let's work together to broaden our reach and help enable patient-centric care for parents most affected by societal boundaries to healthcare!

Experiencing Mental Health Concerns in the USA? This Data Likely Won't Make Things Better About three of every four U.S. adults polled perceived that the healthcare system addresses #mental #health (MH) issues worse than physical health concerns, according to Gallup and West Health research just released. Making things more worrisome, those views are slightly worse among #older individuals, the same ones who seem to struggle more than most others to get needed MH care. A similar majority of Americans (about 70%) felt that society-at-large has #negative views of people with MH conditions. Negative perceptions like those displayed in this survey can impede affected persons from getting care, even when it's available. The future of mental #healthcare is dim when you combine these #mindsets with shortages of mental health services, #skillsets and staff, limitations in reimbursability for these therapies, resilient views that seeking this kind of help can ruin one's employability, and growth in false information being spread about people suffering with these conditions. And adding in another factor, when have you last heard an official running for office communicate or advertise about their policies and plans to constructively address this issue? It is time for #advocates and those negatively impacted to step up and be heard about this growing problem. Your voice matters, so communicate with your elected officials (and candidates seeking office) to let them know this is an issue you care about and want to see more attention and resources invested in it. If crickets and silence remain the main contexts others hear, then don't be surprised when the problem worsens even further.

Mental health inequities are a growing concern with significant economic implications. A recent article from The Hill highlights that mental health disparities cost the U.S. economy an estimated $278 billion annually, largely due to untreated mental health conditions among marginalized communities. The impact of these disparities extends beyond financial loss, affecting individuals' overall well-being and quality of life. At Brave Health, we are deeply committed to bridging these gaps. Our mission is to make mental health care accessible to all, particularly those in underserved communities. By partnering with health plans and leveraging telehealth solutions, we ensure that individuals receive the care they need, regardless of their location or socio-economic status. We focus on increasing awareness and providing targeted support to those who are often overlooked in the healthcare system. Our work not only helps reduce the economic burden of mental health disparities but also brings about meaningful change in the lives of those we serve. Together, we can create a future where equitable mental health care is a reality for everyone. #MentalHealthEquity #Telehealth #HealthcareInnovation #BraveHealth
