I have stood through scores of different shopfloor meetings in the last 4 years, and most of them were a waste of time. But I have observed some organizations really make the most of them and it shows in their performance. It starts with accountability. Regardless of the meeting name, such as “start of shift,” “daily production,” “huddle,” or “tier-board,” making the time was important but the value to everyone was questionable or non-existent. The lack of value stemmed from a lack of trust that anything would come from it. When leaders aren’t assigning issues to names and holding those people accountable to get something done, then the value-adders don’t trust that sharing in the meeting will result in anything getting better. When the team sees that problems identified result in problems getting fixed, then they volunteer to become a part of the process, working together to drive continuous improvement and “win” each day with on-time, on-quality, safe production at incrementally lower costs. It is a philosophy that focuses on making small, incremental changes regularly to improve efficiency and quality. It can be applied to any business process, and it typically involves all employees from the top floor to the shop floor, where a team comes together to solve a particular problem in a short period, often a week or less. It's about involving stakeholders at every level, engaging them in a journey of collective problem-solving that benefits everyone, encouraging suggestions, engagement, and involvement from all staff members.
