The HBdV Fellows introduce themselves. We start with Merle-Sophie Thielmann from the Universität Mannheim. At the #7ECSLHE, I present a seminar concept introducing pre-service teachers to diversity-oriented school improvement processes. Students gained insight into the implementation of these processes during visits to cooperating schools and reflected on their future roles in shaping the schools they will work at. The presentation of the seminar concept is supplemented by qualitative analyses of students' written reflections and group discussions on the potential benefits of service learning in a) addressing the challenges faced by schools in socially disadvantaged areas and b) preparing pre-service teachers for teaching at and shaping schools in increasingly diverse environments.

Free to attend. Our next talk is with the wonderful Professor Gill Richards - this session is in hybrid format (both online and in person). Gill has a wealth of experience and expertise in SEND, Equity, and Inclusion; her talks are hugely accessible, deeply connected to the research, and always delivered with kindness. Here is a little taster: Do you really know me? Understanding the impact of some young people's reality. Most schools have students who cause them concern, but despite an ever-increasing range of initiatives and strategies, there are some vulnerable young people who continue to exist on the periphery of school life. While there can be many reasons for this, one thing is clear, these young people’s needs are not being met. Could this be because schools are responding to what they know about their students from what is overtly presented, unaware of deeper issues impacting their lives? In this session, through examples of research and school practice, Gill explores how really knowing our students enables us to make better informed decisions on ways in which to address the barriers they experience so they can benefit from a more positive engagement with education. Embracing Educational Equity: THE Pathway to Greater Access & Opportunity (#3)   Today, I am in northern Michigan, at the Grand Traverse Resort in Traverse City, for the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP) EdCon 2024. I will open this afternoon’s breakout session with the following:   ‘Relying on past practices and outdated models only serves to perpetuate existing inequities and limits the potential of students. To impact educational equity, we must embrace a new approach that breaks away from traditional and outdated teacher practices and assumptions about students’ academic potential. By looking forward, we can envision a more inclusive and equitable educational system that meets the needs of all learners, regardless of their background or circumstances.’   Educators, consider these four prompts that today's session participants will explore: 1. What would it mean for your school culture if you increased access to advanced courses for underserved and underrepresented students? 2. How would increasing access at the highest academic levels change mindsets and expectations more broadly within your school? 3. What policies and practices could you implement at the district and school levels to codify a system of high expectations that results in equitable access to and success in advanced courses? 4. What resources/support do you need in order to advance this work in the 2024-25 school year?

Top 5 Secrets to Choosing the Perfect Independent School for Your Child 90% of parents don’t know these insider tips before applying! 1.) Start early in the process by visiting an independent school fair in your geographic area. Today, my colleague Derrick Redwine and I hosted the Paideia School table at the #BlackParentForum school fair. It was great partnering with him to share information with visitors. 2.) Narrow down a list of schools to do further research online. Do not over-ask at the school fair because this is really a time for admissions representatives to meet and invite as many people as possible to learn further about their school. You’ll have another opportunity to make a first impression later in the process.   3.) Continue to narrow your list to 3-5 schools you plan to visit in-person. Even if you’ve already picked what you think is a great school it only helps to see multiple schools in person providing you a first hand experience to compare against. 4.) Make note of how you felt during the school visit. What was most memorable? What was worrisome? What did you notice in regards to the interactions between children and adults, children and children, and adults and adults? 5.) Enroll at the school that is the right match for your family.
