The International Day of Women and Girls in Science was created by the United Nations in 2015 to recognize the role women and girls play in science and to promote STEM careers to future generations of women. You can celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science by: 1. Highlighting Female Scientists: Sharing stories and achievements of women scientists, both historical figures and contemporary leaders, on social media and within your professional networks. 2. Organizing Events and Discussions: Hosting or participate in webinars, workshops, and panel discussions that address the challenges women face in STEM and celebrate their successes. 3. On February 11 we celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science 🧪 Why is today important? A significant gender gap has persisted throughout the years at all levels of the STEM disciplines worldwide. While great strides have been made to increase participation in higher education, under-representation is still present. 𝘿𝙞𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬... Female researchers tend to have shorter, less well-paid careers. Also, women are typically given smaller research grants than their male colleagues and, while they represent 33.3% of all researchers, only 12% of members of national science academies are women (via United Nations). Women can do great things in the field, and so many are already working to strengthen the ties between science, policy, and society for strategies oriented towards the future. My life journey led me to study in single-sex schools during both middle and high school. I am not advocating for this type of education, obviously. Nor am I promoting the government that implemented this system, whose primary goal, far from being humanitarian, was to "shield" its female citizens from the eyes of men. But surprisingly, in this exclusively female environment, I was able to pursue my interests, my inclination towards mathematical sciences. It was upon arriving at a French university on a mathematical track that I was puzzled: 'But where were the girls?' And this only worsened over the years as I moved towards computer science. It was later that I began to glimpse an explanation, by questioning my university colleagues. Strangely, never in my childhood or my educational journey had I heard that math and computer science were for boys, and literature and social sciences were for girls. My intellectual abilities had never been subjected to comparison with those of boys. I simply did what I felt skilled at. Surprisingly, this didn't seem to be the case in France, the country of human rights... and women's rights? 'They didn't know it was impossible, so they did it.' And for girls, we can agree, that it's far from impossible to love math and science and to excel in these areas; history has proven this time and time again. Let's stop pigeonholing children and young people into presumed intellectual capacities. Into predefined roles. My son loves drawing and literature, my daughter has incredible logic and is already enjoying doing calculations in kindergarten, and she loves board games. And they both love dinosaurs and unicorns, playing house or with Legos! I am alarmed when my children come home from school and say, 'Mom, pink is for girls' or 'soccer is for boys.' I hear about ongoing equality initiatives, but apparently, the effects are slow to come. There's no need to revisit the disadvantages of women's underrepresentation in sciences; we are aware and conscious of their detrimental effects. Meanwhile, it's not the men in power who will have an interest in changing anything in a well-established system. Let's not wait for these gentlemen to open doors for us. It's up to us to impose initiatives that will grant us the equality we deserve, as well as the positions for which we are equally intellectually competent and qualified. #WomenInScience #InternationalDayofWomenandGirlsinScience https://lnkd.in/eApJuU74

🌎 👩🎓 International Day of Women and Girls in Science of the United Nations is coming on 11 February! The continued necessity of this day is evident, as the growth in the number of female professors is plateauing. Our own Ashley Wong focuses on labor and gender and she has done interesting research about how an increase in female representation in the academic environment can lead to more research on gender by both male and female faculty.   💬 Ashley: ‘We study what happened when 76 all-male US universities, including many elite research institutions such as most of the Ivy League schools, started admitting women between 1960 and 1990.'   💡 What was the result? 'Once female students arrived on campus, we see a large increase (44%) in the output of research about women and gender-related topics. First, these universities started hiring and attracting female faculty and researchers interested in these topics. Second: exposure to female students influenced existing faculty, who were mostly men, to expand their research focus.' 'This shift towards more inclusive research topics highlights the critical role of diversity in the academic environment in shaping scientific inquiry, suggesting that greater representation can inspire a wider perspective in research directions, contributing significantly to societal welfare.’ Read more about her research: 🔗https://lnkd.in/eG2GmuG2

"The science sells itself!" "Academic pursuits should not co-exist with commercial interests!" These are myths I've encountered. But what happens when groundbreaking research stays locked in journals? And when data and evidence don't inform business? And when businesses and employers don't inform education and research agendas? Working with John Skrentny reminded me of the many scientists I've worked with in the past and that bridging academia and public discourse matters for: 1) Policymaking 2) Challenging misinformation 3) Real-world impact 4) Purpose-driven business I had read an op-ed John wrote for the LA Times and I immediately devoured his book, Wasted Education: How We Fail Our Graduates in STEM. As I became familiar with John's work, I knew we had the potential to change minds. To rewrite the narrative. To improve policy. And to help grow QuantumBloom. My journey from RTI to Duke back to RTI and now to QuantumBloom has shown me the power of amplifying academic voices. Researchers like Pia MacDonald, PhD, MPH, CPH, Stephanie Hawkins, Alex Kral and jon e zibbell, PhD prove that engaging with media and policymakers drives change. During the Ebola, Zika, and Covid crises, Pia's expertise shaped global health responses. Stephanie’s work informs justice policies. Alex and Jon's insights informed critical policies on the opioid crisis. If their expert voices were not in the mix, what non-experts might drive policymaking, narratives, and innovation agendas? We need the academics--the objective experts--in blog posts📝, op-eds📰, media interviews📺, Capitol Hill🏛️, and boardrooms🏢. And we need industry in the academy. To align research agendas with business realities. 🎓 To shape academic programs for today’s workforce requirements. 🤖 What do you think? "Diversity in research expands the pool of talented researchers, bringing in fresh perspectives, talent and creativity. This Day is a reminder that women and girls play a critical role in science and technology communities and that their participation should be strengthened." #womeninscience Did you know: - Women are typically given smaller research grants than their male colleagues and, while they represent 33.3% of all researchers, only 12% of members of national science academies are women. - In cutting edge fields such as artificial intelligence, only one in five professionals (22%) is a woman. - Despite a shortage of skills in most of the technological fields driving the Fourth Industrial Revolution, women still account for only 28% of engineering graduates and 40% of graduates in computer science and informatics. - Female researchers tend to have shorter, less well-paid careers. February 11th is the 9th annual International Day of Women and Girls in Science #IDWGIS. Some ideas on how to 'celebrate': Learn about women’s contributions to science. It is fascinating to learn about the many female trailblazers who have contributed to our society through science. Search for online resources, books, and movies that tell their stories. Share what you learn and honor these women through social media. Encourage a girl to seek her academic passion. Do you have a daughter or know a young girl interested in science? Encourage her to stick with it! Too often, girls veer from their passions and are not supported to take the road less traveled. If you are not familiar with the latest STEM career options, find a friend who could explain them to her and provide mentorship in her journey. #womeninscience #trailblazingwomen #stemcareers
