In am a proud son of a woman in STEM. Celebrate Today reach out. She was a young, recently-divorced, new mom. She started as entry-level operator for AT&T in Providence (a woman’s job 🙄 then) in the 1960’s and remarried in the ERA-era. Over 25 years she rose to Managment/executive-responsibility overseeing 100’s of telecom/civil engineers and tradesmen (man’s job). I recall anger, arguments, tears, anxiety, and self-doubt that she carried home from work. She tells my 2 STEM-path daughters, “ the belittlement (getting coffee for male peers), sex jokes, social exclusion by peers/subordinates from bonding activities (golf, bars), and the more insidious, passive- aggressive mananegment by superior men. To make me want to quit ONLY drove her to outwork and outlast”. Much progress, but there are still bias and culture influences that cause young women to drift from STEM. When they enter high school. Please support, train, and do frequent 360 check-ins with new woman employees. Especially, non-STEM woman entering innovation-driven, STEM businesses. They may grow into your company’s best “Managers of the Engineers”. #innovation #engineers
