I applaud the Surgeon General’s announcement naming gun violence a public health crisis. As a public health professional, I know first-hand what data-driven, evidence-based programming and strategic partnerships can do - from working with automotive manufacturers to ensure every car has child passenger safety systems to fighting Big Tobacco to hold them accountable for knowingly marketing addictive nicotine products across the globe, public health researchers and practitioners have successfully worked with corporations, policymakers, law enforcement, and other stakeholders to keep communities healthy and safe. Promising best practices are emerging from successful community- and hospital-based violence intervention programs, as well as safe storage programs that are gaining traction across the country. Gun buy back programs are ongoing in communities where violence proliferates. By looking at gun violence through a public health lens, we can examine all of these programs to see how they complement each other, to understand what truly works. As a gun violence prevention advocate, I truly hope that Dr. Murthy’s call to action will move us beyond divisive rhetoric so that we can address this uniquely American crisis. Our communities and our children deserve better. 🧡 #gunviolenceprevention #gunsafety #endgunviolence #injuryprevention https://lnkd.in/eCdR87qV

Dr. Vivek Murthy has officially recognized gun violence in America as a public health issue, drawing parallels with historical health campaigns against smoking and traffic safety. Here are some highlights from the declaration: - Gun violence is now framed as a health issue, not just a political debate. - Recommended measures include safe storage laws, universal background checks, and an assault weapons ban. - Increased funding for research into firearm violence prevention is essential. - Health workers are advised to discuss firearm safety with patients. - Public health strategies aim to shift national perspectives on gun safety, much like past successes with tobacco. It's time to look at gun violence through the lens of health and safety for all, especially our children. #PublicHealthCrisis #GunViolence #SafetyFirst #HealthOverPolitics #UniversalBackgroundChecks #SafeStorage #RedFlagLaws #AssaultWeaponsBan #FirearmSafety #ProtectOurChildren #EndGunViolence

Gun violence as a public health crisis explored by U.S. Senate Democrats "Ranney said that for the U.S. to treat gun violence as a public health epidemic, the first step is to first collect data on gun violence. She said through data, researchers will be able to find risks and predictions and then figure out what kind of programs can change those patterns, such as violence prevention programs." Interesting. It sounds like framing gun violence as a public health crisis opens the doors to a diversity of organizations being able to converge research. The U.S. Surgeon General's recent declaration of gun violence as a public health crisis underscores the need for comprehensive, evidence-based solutions. By employing a public health approach, similar to strategies that successfully reduced smoking rates, the focus shifts to preventive measures, including personal vetting. Enhanced personal vetting processes could significantly mitigate risks by ensuring firearms are only accessible to those who meet stringent safety criteria. This method emphasises prevention, aiming to reduce the distressing rates of gun-related incidents, particularly among youths and vulnerable communities. It's a proactive step towards safeguarding public health and safety. #GunSafety #PublicHealthApproach #ResponsibleOwnership

U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy has declared gun violence a public health crisis, due to increasing firearm-related injuries and deaths. Emphasizing the need for safety in everyday activities, he proposed measures such as banning automatic rifles, universal background checks for gun purchases, firearms industry regulation, laws restricting public gun use, and penalties for unsafe gun storage practices. This declaration highlights the critical importance of addressing this crisis through comprehensive actions. As clinicians, our advocacy and expertise can significantly contribute to gun violence prevention and creating a safer future. At People Power Health, our commitment to advocating for this cause is more vital than ever. We had the honor of interviewing Dr. Joseph Sakran, a renowned trauma surgeon, policy advisor, and public health expert, as well as a nationally recognized advocate for gun violence prevention. Dr. Sakran shared his powerful insights, emphasizing the importance of prevention. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlighted 2020 as the year with the highest gun-related deaths in the U.S, stressing the need for effective prevention and safety measures. Limiting firearm access could create a safer society. Despite opposition from groups like the NRA, clinicians play a crucial role in advocating for change. Witnessing the aftermath of gun violence firsthand, they can drive significant policy changes through research, education, and support for comprehensive solutions. #PublicHealth #Safety #Advocacy #Prevention #CliniciansForChange

Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy has declared gun violence in America a public health crisis. Just as campaigns against smoking and traffic fatalities have saved countless lives, Dr. Murthy envisions a multipronged approach to curb gun deaths. His 32-page advisory outlines measures such as increasing funding for firearm violence prevention research; advising health workers to discuss firearm storage; and recommending safe storage laws, universal background checks, "red flag" laws, and an assault weapons ban. With gunshot wounds now surpassing car accidents as the leading cause of death for children and adolescents, and a disturbing rise in firearm suicides among young people, it’s crucial to act now. Dr. Murthy's call to action is clear: addressing gun violence with a comprehensive public health strategy is essential for the safety and well-being of our communities. I agree with Dr. Murthy. It’s past time to put this issue in the public healthcare realm and out of the political realm. The majority of Americans want gun violence to be reduced and that means reducing gun access. “The U.S. surgeon general on Tuesday declared gun violence a public health crisis, driven by the fast-growing number of injuries and deaths involving firearms in the country. The advisory issued by Dr. Vivek Murthy, the nation's top doctor, came as the U.S. grappled with another summer weekend marked by mass shootings that left dozens of people dead or wounded. To drive down gun deaths, Murthy calls on the U.S. to ban automatic rifles, introduce universal background checks for purchasing guns, regulate the industry, pass laws that would restrict their use in public spaces and penalize people who fail to safely store their weapons. None of those suggestions can be implemented nationwide without legislation passed by Congress, which typically recoils at gun control measures. Some state legislatures, however, have enacted or may consider some of the surgeon general's proposals. "It is now time for us to take this issue out of the realm of politics and put it in the realm of public health, the way we did with smoking more than a half century ago," Murthy told the AP.” #healthcare #gunsecurity #gunaccess #gunregistration #gunregulation #commonsense #guncontrol
