NEW TOOLKIT FOR BETTER REPORTING ON GUN VIOLENCE News coverage of gun violence can perpetuate harmful stereotypes and make it seem inevitable, but, as communicators, we have an opportunity to tell better stories to help minimize harm and make it clear that change is possible. This new toolkit, developed in partnership with our friends from the Philadelphia Center for Gun Violence Reporting (PCGVR) and the Stoneleigh Foundation, includes guidance to help communicators tell more complete, humanizing stories to build support for a public health approach to gun violence prevention. Take a look at the toolkit:

We are so thrilled to put the Violence Prevention Navigation Framework out into the world! This was a labor of love with our dear friends from Muflehun. VPNF leverages state of the art technology to seamlessly harvest big data sets that represent localized risk and protective factors for gun violence prevention at community and society levels. We know many local and state leaders WANT to prevent gun violence but also know first hand that the desire alone not only won't get the job done, a heedless effort can end up causing more harm while wasting public dollars. VPNF first gives you comprehensive data across sectors to shine the light on the specific factors that are having the greatest impact on local violence. Then, with the clear lens provided by that foundational quantitative data, VPNF then turns to the most important perspective-- the people perspective. To uncover why and how those factors grew into what they are, VPNF gathers crucial qualitative data from the people who know best-- community members, service providers, government agencies, and so on. With both forms of data collected, VPNF then provides local leaders with a prioritized list of factors that they can use to begin their strategies to address these root causes. These primary prevention efforts would not only lessen the likelihood of future violence in the long-term, but VPNF also intentionally and rightfully puts the onus back on governments and elected officials to undo harm and inequities caused by past (and sometimes current) policies and practices rather than blaming and punitively punishing people and communities. We would love to bring VPNF to your city, county or state! Feel free to reach out, and you can find more information here: https://lnkd.in/eF-Gg73C

When two deadly epidemics conflate, the consequences are unfathomable. Domestic violence with gun access is deadly, and all too often, we see vulnerable lives taken by abusers with guns. June is Gun Violence Awareness Month, and in talking about gun violence, it is impossible to ignore its distinct correlation with domestic violence. We cannot leave victims and survivors out of the conversation - they must be held front and center in addressing the lack of protections that our communities face. Help us advocate for a better, safer future. In 1988 gun injuries were the second leading cause of death in kids. Today, it is the leading cause. Two children are shot every hour in this country. Each day 12 children die from gun violence in America. Nobody thinks this is ok. But how do we move from utter heartbreak to solving this public health crisis? Gun injuries affect every single community, and every single congressional district. According to Dr. Marc Gorelick , President and CEO Children’s Minnesota, the approach to gun injury doesn’t have to be partisan; “I straddle the line which focuses on the implications of this issue, and think about the policies that have been implemented to protect kids and adults from violence.” In this conversation, Dr. Gorelick discusses his lifelong career as an ER doc and pediatrician, and the impact he has seen first hand caring for kids with gun injuries. He points out that “this doesn’t have to be partisan; it’s a moral and public policy issue.” Listen today as we hear Dr. Gorelick address this public health emergency, and the urgency for change that needs to happen in public policy. This is not a partisan issue. It’s a human issue. 🏛️ Addressing Gun Violence: A Call to Healthcare Leaders 📢 The White House is rallying healthcare executives and doctors to combat gun violence, recognizing it as a pressing public health crisis. As part of this effort, 160 healthcare officials are convening at the White House to discuss proactive strategies aimed at curbing gun-related injuries and fatalities. In 2022, over 48,000 lives were lost to gun violence in the U.S., with suicides representing more than half of these deaths. Alarmingly, gun violence disproportionately affects marginalized communities, particularly Black and Hispanic populations residing in underserved neighborhoods. It's a stark reality that demands immediate attention. Despite its severity, gun violence research has often been sidelined due to political gridlock. Now, the Biden administration is urging healthcare leaders to take the reins by enhancing data collection on firearm injuries. This data-driven approach will empower us to develop targeted prevention measures and mitigate the impact of gun violence on our communities. Furthermore, healthcare providers are being encouraged to engage in conversations with patients about firearm safety—a crucial step in promoting public safety and reducing the risk of gun-related incidents. 🌐 Read the full article here https://bit.ly/4ecFUNi At the Partnership, we stand in solidarity with these efforts to address gun violence as a public health issue. Together, let's leverage our collective expertise to safeguard our communities and foster a safer, healthier future for all. #GunViolencePrevention #PublicHealth #CommunitySafety #HealthcareLeaders #BidenAdministration #GunViolenceAwarenessMonth

MPH | Sr. Marketing and Communications Data Analyst at Ochsner Health System | Public Health Advocate
This morning I woke up to headlines in the news reading the words "Public Health Crisis". The U.S. Surgeon issued a first-of-its-kind advisory declaring gun violence a national public health crisis and recommending it be treated as such. This has been a long time coming! 👏 The scope of gun violence has a wide reaching impact on victims and communities and a slew of policy suggestions for lawmakers, community leaders and health systems. Firearm-related injury has been the leading cause of death for U.S. children and adolescents since 2020 — not only a physical but also a mental toll on survivors, families and community members at large. The National Rifle Association has long opposed the framing of gun violence as a public health issue and successfully lobbied for legislation that effectively froze federal funding into gun violence research over the last three decades. 48,204 people died from firearm-related injuries (including suicides, homicides and unintentional deaths) in 2022, after that number reached a near three-decade high the previous year. This is a huge step to allow for the investment federal funding into gun violence research and support the creation of legislation to help protect our communities.

The American Public Health Association welcomes the Surgeon General's Advisory on Firearm Violence This important advisory will help to educate the public about the devastating toll that gun violence takes on the health of our nation through suicide, violent crime and unintentional shootings. It also includes important recommendations outlining a public health approach to addressing this crisis, including improving research and data collection, implementing community violence reduction programs, requiring safe storage of firearms and keeping firearms out of the wrong hands through the implementation of universal background checks for all firearm purchases and extreme risk protection orders and domestic violence protection orders. In the United States, gun violence is a major public health crisis and a leading cause of preventable premature death. It is particularly stark among children and adolescents, a population for which firearm-related violence is the leading cause of death. In 2022, more than 48,000 individuals, including more than 4,600 children and adolescents, died as a result of gun violence and many more suffered nonfatal gun injuries. In addition to the direct loss of lives due to firearm violence, children and others are struggling with the mental health implications caused by the all-too-common acts of firearm violence in our schools, places of worship and other public venues where we gather with family and friends. Preventing death, disability and injury from gun violence requires a comprehensive public health approach. We welcome the Surgeon General’s advisory and the funding Congress has provided for gun violence prevention research. APHA will continue our efforts to advocate for this important funding and other measures to reduce gun violence, working with Congress and the Biden administration to address this ongoing public health threat. We also call on all Americans to raise their voice and take action to end gun violence.” Learn More: https://lnkd.in/gYfUa93C #PublicHealth #Violence #Advocacy #APHA
