A lot of people on here have been posting about 2024 goals and it can feel overwhelming. Do you need to set goals? What if you don’t have a clear vision of your future? What’s the point when you know you wont follow through with them? Goal-setting is typically stressful and unrealistic. Here’s a different approach I’m taking this year for the first time: Set a Direction: 1. Close your eyes 2. Picture your life on January 1 2025 3. Get specific in where you want to be: • Where are you physically? • What are you doing? • Who are you with? • How do you feel? Write it down. If your image is exactly where you are right now, that's great. Your goals can be to maintain what you have. If your image is different from where you are right now, you can work backwards to set checkpoint goals for each quarter of the year. Now that you have a direction, create a system. As James Clear said: "Goals can provide direction and even push you forward in the short term, but eventually a well designed system will always win." I’m using the NICE goal setting system from Ali Abdaal: N: Near-term • Daily or weekly goals, rather than solely yearly I: Input-based • Emphasize the process, rather than the outcome C: Controllable • Focus on goals within your control, don’t make them too unrealistic E: Energizing • Set goals that are energizing I’m also setting parameters for each goal: • An ideal output • An output if it’s a busy day • The minimum viable output So here’s an example of what some of my goals for Q1 look like: 1. Write daily: • Ideally, 500 words • But 250 words is okay • At a minimum one sentence 2. Meditate daily • Ideally for 10 minutes • But 5 minutes is okay • At a minimum 2 minutes 3. Stretch • Ideally 3x/week • But 2x/week is okay • At a minimum 1x/week 4. Read • Ideally 20 minutes/day • But 10 minutes/day is okay • At a minimum 5 minutes/day This system allows you to have “bad” days while still following through with the minimum viable output and not feeling bad about not doing the thing you said you'd do. After the first 90 days of the year, I’ll re-assess: • Am I doing the thing? • Do I enjoy doing the thing? • Are these things getting me closer to the place I want to be on Jan 1 2025? With this system I hope to: • Feel less stressed • Have more flexibility • Actually build momentum Happy 2024!

Love this! Pairing a habit with a goal is transformational! I have been at it for the past 1 year, and I have never been more consistent.

Anytime I see a "NY goal post" I can't help but roll my eyes. I remember being 16 once. But I like your direction approach, I have something similar where I set intentions.
