Winning the University of East Anglia's Innovation Hothouse Competition was a transformative experience for both myself and TraitSeq. The mentoring from Dr Soraya Jones, Entrepreneur in Residence at UEA, was invaluable as we worked together through sessions to build my confidence, sharpen my pitch deck, and refine my communication style. She consistently went above and beyond, offering advice on team-building, preparing for investment, and other business matters that were pressing at the time. The sense of community and camaraderie built with fellow entrepreneurs during the competition was another highlight. Sharing experiences, networking, and making friends with like-minded individuals was motivating and rewarding. The investment readiness workshop with Mills & Reeve helped prepare us for raising investment. On the day of the competition, the feedback we received on our pitch deck from respected individuals in the innovation and investment space helped prepare me for pitching to external investors. As a direct result of the competition, we generated several investment opportunities and were contacted by several agritech businesses interested in our technology. Finally, winning 12 months of virtual tenancy at the Centrum building has provided TraitSeq with a strategic base at the heart of the Norwich Research Park. I strongly encourage everyone with innovative ideas or research that has the potential to make a significant impact to apply!
