Significant initiative and formulation of great strategy. I would add that in the formulation of a funding strategy we must remember that the US cannot afford to get funding by increasing the deficit and even if the grant process means that there must be 20% of the funding must be committed along with the application. Consideration must be given to HR 4052, the creation of the Nation’s fifth National Infrastructure Bank. The NIB will compliment existing funding sources and fund ALL infrastructure projects. Canada needs to do the same for VIA! The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is conducting an Amtrak Daily Long-Distance Service Study to evaluate the restoration of daily long-distance intercity rail passenger service and the potential for new Amtrak long-distance routes. This study will ultimately create a long-term vision for long-distance passenger rail service and identify capital projects and funding needed to implement that vision. The initial proposal would add 15 long-distance routes, serving 61 additional metropolitan areas to create a true national network. https://lnkd.in/gzriNt_F

The U.S., despite decades of research and studies, remains without authentic high-speed rail options. Since 1987, investors have attempted to introduce bullet train service to Texas. In 2014, a group organized under the name Texas Central launched the most recent attempt to connect Dallas to Houston with a bullet train that travels more than 200 miles per hour, shortening a three and a half hour drive to a 90-minute train ride. The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and Houston are two of the largest population centers in the country. Here's why Amtrak is attempting to revive the Texas Central bullet train.

The Vancouver Island Railway is a unique Public-Private partnership between the Island Corridor Foundation (owned by the 14 First Nations and 5 Regional Districts it passes through since 2005) and its partner operator, Southern Rail of Vancouver Island (SVI) under contract to deliver freight, passenger, and maintenance services on behalf of the Island Corridor Foundation (ICF). After an extensive array of independent analysis of the railway contracted by the BC government in recent years, a viable business case has been put forward for the public to see. Last week, AFCO’s Steve Forrer was honored to attend a press conference celebrating a $40 million federal grant to support air cargo infrastructure at Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE). The funding award is part of a program created and supported by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.   U.S. Senator Bob Casey and U.S. Representative Susan Wild were on hand to underscore the grant’s importance to the region: Rep. Wild called the airport “a huge economic driver for our area” (Lehigh Valley News) while Senator Casey noted that ABE is an “economic engine that is critical to the success of the region” (WDIY).   AFCO has been working with Lehigh Northampton Airport Authority (LNAA) to address their immediate need for enhanced, modern, and sustainable air cargo capacity – which has seen an approximate 800% jump over the last 10 years. In 2023 alone, ABE processed more than 275 million pounds of air cargo through its facilities. This federal funding will improve the airport’s day-to-day operations and make its movement of cargo and freight more efficient while creating jobs, supporting business, and contributing to the region’s overall economic success. Sad to see the MTA delay and NYSDOT not sign off on a community supported rail yard and public space. This initiative is a great example of planning locally where local civics, small business leaders, environmentalists and elected officials at multiple levels of government all came together in support. Not sure what the issue is with DOT and the MTA but it is worth asking questions to understand the rationale for the delay. We are often told that it is local governments that are fractious and block progress. Here is an example of larger entities slowing creative, economically and community enhancing proposals down.
