Sad to see the MTA delay and NYSDOT not sign off on a community supported rail yard and public space. This initiative is a great example of planning locally where local civics, small business leaders, environmentalists and elected officials at multiple levels of government all came together in support. Not sure what the issue is with DOT and the MTA but it is worth asking questions to understand the rationale for the delay. We are often told that it is local governments that are fractious and block progress. Here is an example of larger entities slowing creative, economically and community enhancing proposals down. 🚧 Major Expansion of Dallas North Tollway Set for Spring 2024 🚧 Big news for commuters and businesses in Collin County, Texas! The North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) has announced a significant extension of the Dallas North Tollway, promising enhanced connectivity and potential economic growth for the region. Here's a quick snapshot of this exciting development: Six-Mile Extension: The project, known as "Phase 4A," will extend the tollway six miles through Prosper and Celina, featuring six lanes (three in each direction). This extension is set to begin in Spring 2024, stretching from U.S. 380 to FM Road 428. Future Growth: Looking ahead, "Phase 4B" will further extend the tollway by 7.7 miles, reaching the Grayson County line. This expansion is a strategic move to support one of the fastest-growing areas in the country. Economic Impact: With a project cost of $183 million, the NTTA anticipates that this expansion will not only provide new travel options but also spur economic development and prosperity in the surrounding communities. While the construction may cause some temporary traffic disruptions, the long-term benefits of this expansion are clear. It's a significant step towards accommodating the rapid growth in North Texas and enhancing the region's infrastructure. #CRE #dfwrealestate #landdevelopment https://lnkd.in/geNf7dsy

The Rhode Island Division of Statewide Planning (RIDSP) is working on a limited update of our state’s long-range transportation plan (LRTP). An LRTP is a federally-required plan that sets the vision for a multi-modal transportation system – our roads, bridges, public transit, bike paths, sidewalks, ports, and more - over a minimum of 20 years. Your valuable feedback will help identify the state’s needs, challenges, and opportunities, informing the vision, strategies, and projects included in the final plan. https://hubs.ly/Q02KQJlL0

Main road between #Sheffield and #Manchester to be closed for 2 weeks. The A57 Snake Pass is to be closed again for 2 weeks. Some points: 1) Why is the main road from Sheffield to Manchester controlled by Derbyshire County Council? Why have National Highways not got control of this key road between 2 of the major northern cities. I asked this question at Transport for the North Board some time ago and Mayor Andy Burnham agreed with me that the road connection was unacceptable. 2) Would it be fair to say that Derbyshire County Council do not adopt a national and regional perspective in their management of their road network. Are their considerations ultimately what their elected members think is best for Derbyshire? Should new East Midlands Combined County Authority Mayor Claire Ward be working with Mayors Andy Burnham and Oliver Coppard to jointly seek some longer term solutions? 3) Would this post sound stranger if I were to say that the main road from [Leeds to Manchester] or [Liverpool and Manchester] or [Newcastle and Leeds] was to close for 2 weeks? 4) All the talk of huge tunnels, at vast cost, under the Peak deflects attention away from creating a modern road with modest tunnelling in the most exposed stretches and those areas where landslips will [and already have] occurred. A progressive programme to improve the resilience of the road. 5) I will get comments like - "Peak National Park!" "No new roads!" and many more one dimensional points. Greener fairer growth is all about balancing up factors and on Sheffield to Manchester connectivity, the growth aspect is an absolutely key consideration. The article is here: https://lnkd.in/eTuv5SpD If you have found any aspects of this post bemusing, then please contact Ministers at the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom. I have contacted them, in my various roles, more times than the Snake Pass has been closed, but I do believe that there is a special tray marked "Toxic, Do Not Touch" in the Minister's office for Too Difficult matters like this.

The Eastern Powerhouse fully support Jack Abbott MP's proposal to reinstate a Transportation Task Force. This echoes our Manifesto ask for a Northern bypass for Ipswich – this will alleviate problems with regular closures to the Orwell Bridge. James Palmer: "It's time to be ambitious for the region. The East deserves a high quality, modern transport network. The region is recognised as a leader in science, technology and green energy and its transport system should reflect that." Many parts of the region are deemed remote because of poor transport links, while deprivation and poor transport links are closely related. For the East to reach its potential as an economy, major investment into the roads network is needed. The Orwell Bridge improvements are a priority for the entire region. https://lnkd.in/dMq5aPTG

The NOFO for the RRCEP was published in the Federal Register today. Applications are due September 23, 2024. This is a combined NOFO for FY23 and FY24 and provides a total of $1.15 billion in funding. Just over $38 million is set aside for planning projects, and Federal Railroad Administration indicates they are specifically focused on planning projects seeking to advance one or more grade separations. In addition, $229 million is set aside for projects in rural or tribal lands, and $11 million of that is for counties with fewer than 20 residents per square miles.

$2.1B investment in Columbia, SC’s malfunction junction. It needs it. The South Carolina Dept. of Transportation is untangling a congested, complicated knot of an interstate corridor, aiming to change the so-called “malfunction junction” into the safe, modern and smooth-traveling Carolina Crossroads. The ambitious, $2.1-billion project is the largest the state has ever undertaken—as it overhauls the corridor of Interstates 20, 26 and 126 in Columbia in a redesign to prioritize safety and traffic flow on the most congested portion of highway in South Carolina’s Midlands region.

From the Cab, Carolinas Association for Passenger Trains May 2024 newsletter (shared with permission) Martin Wheeler, President Don Yehle, Editor What If NC Received Additional Funding for Its Corridor Studies? TRAIN INFRASTRUCTURE AND ACCELERATION ACT: S 821 Senate Bill S 821, currently in the NC Senate's Rules Committee, aims to provide additional funding on top of the $500,000 per corridor already allotted through the FRA's Corridor ID Program. No local match is required. This legislation seeks to increase funding for FRA Corridor ID projects on 7 corridors in North Carolina. If passed, each corridor, including Wilmington to Raleigh, would receive an extra one million dollars. Those interested in showing support should reach out to the Governor, State Representatives, and Senators, especially members of Transportation Committees. It would also be appropriate to seek support from City Councils, County Commissions, Metropolitan Planning Organizations, Rural Planning Organizations, and Chambers of Commerce. The seven proposed rail corridors are: - Charlotte to Washington, D.C. - Charlotte to Atlanta, GA - Charlotte to Kings Mountain - Winston Salem to Raleigh - Fayetteville to Raleigh - Wilmington to Raleigh - Asheville to Salisbury https://lnkd.in/gXyk8sQG

The decision today to remove the safeguarding of Phase 2a land from Birmingham-Crewe is a mistake. Our research shows that if the land currently reserved for HS2 between Birmingham and Crewe were to be sold, the loss of value to the tax payer will be as much as £100m, whilst the HS2 Chair last week told the Select Committee that a further £100m of costs could be incurred in the process. Although we welcome the continued safeguarding of land at Handsacre, protecting the remaining land remains essential. Since the Prime Minister’s announcement in October it has become clear that the cancellation of Phase 2 will require a significant alternative plan for rail investment to avoid worsening existing capacity issues on the West Coast Main Line. A viable alternative plan may require some, or all, of this land and a hasty sale of it could make delivering such a plan impossible, or at least more expensive. Smart countries keep their options open for the future and prematurely removing the safeguarding before this new plan is developed is foolhardy. #rail #railways #connectivitymatters #lowcarbon #lowcarboninfrastructure #lowcarboneconomy #birmingham #crewe #railnetwork #transportplanning #network #westcoastmainline #networknorth
