🌍 European Mobility Week 2024: Istanbul's Steps Toward Sustainable Transport As part of European Mobility Week 2024, Istanbul hosted several events to promote sustainable transportation under the Istanbul Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) Phase II. Each event focused on making the city's mobility systems more eco-friendly, inclusive, and people-centered. 🚴♀️ Bicycle Public Information Meeting (September 21): Discussions highlighted the expansion of cycling routes in Istanbul, with global insights shared by Project Expert Haluk Camcıgil. Participants contributed ideas for integrating bike lanes into public transport, showcasing cycling as a sustainable, everyday option. ⛴️ Movement is Freedom Ferry Event (September 20): This unique ferry ride along the Kadıköy-Beşiktaş route combined music, interactive discussions, and an origami workshop. The event explored the importance of maritime transportation in reducing environmental impact and enhancing public spaces. 🚶♂️ Healthy Streets Workshop (September 17): In Kartaltepe Neighbourhood, residents evaluated local streets based on global “Healthy Streets” principles, identifying solutions to improve walkability and accessibility, emphasizing pedestrian priority. #EuropeanMobilityWeek #SustainableCities #UrbanMobility #Istanbul #Cycling #PublicTransport #HealthyStreets #EcoFriendly #SUMP

Sustainable mobility in cities across the globe? A fascinating study and visualization of the ABC of mobility (in cities)! The study and visualizations with ABC triangles present the mobility profiles of 800 cities around the world, with the three mobility categories of car / public transport / active mobility. The color indicates the region in the world, and the size of the circle the population. Some of my takeaways are in the PDF below. We definitely have a lot of work to bring both the electric public transports and the active mobility (cycling and #intermediatevehicle) up. Why aren't our cities cycling-friendly yet? 🚴♂️🌆 In many parts of the world, urban mobility is not just a choice but a necessity. Despite cycling being one of the most sustainable and healthy modes of transport, its integration into urban planning could be faster. As a cyclist, you might often feel sidelined in the city's transport hierarchy, from insufficient cycling lanes to the need for secure bike parking. But remember, every time you choose to cycle, you're not just benefiting the environment but also your health and well-being. The benefits are clear: reduced traffic congestion, lower emissions, improved public health, and more vibrant local economies. Yet, barriers persist. Is it a lack of political will or public resistance to change? Interestingly, cities that have embraced cycling culture show us a glimpse into a resilient future post-pandemic, where cycling could play a pivotal role in recovery strategies. 🏕 Is it time to rethink how we approach rural mobility?  🚲 With bus services declining and car ownership being out of reach for many, especially low-income households, there’s a growing need for innovative solutions. While cycling has traditionally been seen as an urban fix, new developments like off-road cycle paths and the rise of e-bikes could transform rural travel. Imagine safe, dedicated paths connecting villages and towns, making cycling a viable option for more people, even for longer trips. 🔗 🚴♂️ These changes have the potential not only to make cycling more accessible but also to revitalise rural bus services by integrating them into a more comprehensive multimodal network. They say love makes you feel good, but have you ever cycled in Paris? ❤️🇫🇷😁🚲 More Bikes, More Freedom: On my third visit to Paris, I rented a bike and noticed significant improvements since 2019, my last visit to the City of Light. With more rental options thanks to public-private partnerships, exploring the city became even easier and more accessible. Safety and Respect: Unlike in 2019, this time I felt safe and respected by drivers. A notable change in the city's traffic culture! Benefits of Cycling: Many overlook it, but cycling improves air quality, reduces traffic, promotes well-being, and does not emit CO2. It is the gateway to sustainable and efficient transportation. Visionary Leadership: The efforts of Mayor Anne Hidalgo to make Paris bike-friendly are commendable. Her leadership shows how assertive public efforts can shift paradigms. 🚶♀️🚴♂️ 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀' 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗲 🌳 Paris has long been recognized as a global leader in urban transformation, and the 2023 Sustainable Transport Award (STA) spotlight on #Paris reaffirms its commitment to creating a greener, more inclusive city. 🌍 Key Achievements : ✅ Cycling revolution: Since the implementation of Paris' first major cycling plan in 1996, the city has dramatically expanded its cycling infrastructure. Between 2015 and 2020 alone, the city built over 1,000 kilometers of cycling lanes, increasing cycling adoption by 47%. The ongoing 2021-2026 Velo Plan aims to make Paris 100% cycling-friendly with an investment of €250 million and the addition of 180 kilometers of new cycling paths. ✅Public space reclamation: Paris has transformed major thoroughfares like Rue de Rivoli, reclaiming three out of four lanes for cyclists. The city also plans to convert 70,000 parking spaces into 60 hectares of pedestrian zones, bike parking, and green spaces. ✅Equity and inclusion: Paris' focus on equity is evident in its School Streets initiative, which has created 169 car-free streets near schools, offering safe spaces for children to play and walk. By 2026, the city aims to complete 300 school streets. ✅15-Minute city vision: Central to Paris’ transformation is the 15-minute city concept, where all essential services are within a 15-minute walk or bike ride.
