The fragrance world is buzzing with excitement these days, and our noses are in for a treat! This year's scene is all about many things, reinventing #vanilla; this one will stick around for a while – but not as you know it. We're talking rich, sophisticated twists that leave those too-sweet memories behind. Mouthwatering #honey is going to be dripping across many fragrance creations. We've got veggies and all the herbaceous accords, so perhaps the “eat your greens” slogan found its way into inspiring perfumers to go into that herb garden extra heavily. Brands like Maison Margiela are betting on fresh, herbal, and oh-so-vegetal, from tangy tomato leaf to earthy tarragon. And if we saw the beginning of the 90s body mist trend on the uprise last year, it's getting stronger every month. Phlur, Sol de Janeiro, and Henry Rose are still the pioneers, but we will see more luxury big dogs get into the ring as well. The new mists have grown up, offering refined scents for a subtle, head-to-toe spritz, and these days, consumers demand not only variety but longevity as well, and brands have no choice but to deliver. As for the #perfumetok trends dictating scents – will the Mob Wife aesthetic lead to more dramatic florals? It's summer solstice time 🌻 🌞 and we thought we would capture an unboxing of this beautiful product by a brand we find inspiring; Ffern - they are a natural fragrance maker based in Somerset with a simple vision: to restore perfumery to its artisan roots.  Here's why we are captivated; Each season, at solstice or equinox they make one bottle of fragrance for each person on their ledger. So personal. As well as a clear purpose, the problem they are solving and their brand values are present online. Their website eloquently explains: The industry is dominated by a handful of cosmetics giants who own multiple brands, and mass manufacture their fragrance on a global scale. Carefully sourced natural ingredients and independent artistic expression have been abandoned in favour of cheap chemicals and market forces. Every touchpoint has been considered, from the memorable experience in their shop shop engaging online presence and stylish and intriguing promotional films, to their commissioned artwork and collaborations. The bottle, the box, the batch card with a seal of authenticity, the little fragrance notes, the hand made diffusion stones. In the interest of no waste, they send you a tiny sample, so you can test out the fragrance and if this isn't your cup of tea you simply return the box unopened. Talking of tea, you even get a little, locally sourced seasonal tea bag! Delightful. We love the organic, sustainably sourced ethos which isn't just fluff, they seem to live their purpose and follow through on their promise and there is such a raw honesty and passion to what they do - and of course it smells incredible. Something Ashlee Posner and I have been hearing in many of our conversations with brands is the interest in developing mood boosting fragrances, or fragrances that will create an experience for consumers. We’re seeing this now with brands like Orebella. This makes sense, as “Generation Alpha and Gen Z shoppers love fragrance, but in ways that distinguish them from previous generations of shoppers. For these buyers, mood is everything.” Consumers now have self care rituals to support specific feelings- Their routines aren’t viewed as chores, but small moments from their busy days they can commit to themselves. 🧘♀️ Whether that be a lavender scented body lotion to calm anxiety, or an energizing scented cleanser to feel confident in taking on the day, functional fragrance is in full force, and brands need to think about how their products can help create these experiences. What’s challenging for brands is finding development partners who can develop a fragrance that this same group of customers will trust. Customers who value wellness and who are investing in products to create mood boosting rituals and routines are also looking for products with effective, safe, good for you ingredients. Without the right education, the word “fragrance” (unfortunately) often does not fall into that category. But, it should. 💫 With the right partners, brands have the ability to create safe, functional, non irritating fragrances for products that can be consumers’ “go to” in their routines. Brands should no longer feel they need to limit themselves to being “fragrance free”, but should work with partners who are transparent and value your customers’ well being just as much as your brand does.
