Promoting allyship in the workplace to ensure everyone feels seen, heard, and belongs | Forbes Contributor

Today is the first International Ally Day. I remember when we didn't have words to describe those in the majority group supporting others different from themselves. Language is important. It helps us call people into conversations and leverage our privilege and power for good. Allies can be mentors, sponsors, advocates, coaches, challengers and more. To be a better ally, consider: 1. Intentionally diversifying your network to spend time with people of different races, ethnicities, genders, LGBTQ+ or disabilities 2. Talk with leadership at your organization about allyship and how they are engaging and educating leaders in leading as allies 3. Get other allies involved, spread the word about this day and why it's important #diversityandinclusion #allyship #leadership

I used to be ashamed of having power and privilege. All it did was make me get stuck in inaction. And obviously that absolutely did nothing for marginalized and racialized communities. Getting out of shame and guilt was absolutely essential for my allyship journey. I give a ton of credit to Tema Okun and the Ladder of Empowerment for helping me with that.
