📢 The importance of regular venesections for haemochromatosis (also known as the “Celtic Curse”) patients 📢 📊 As many know, I suffer from a common yet surprisingly little-known - genetic condition, haemochromatosis, which causes the body to absorb too much iron from food, building up over the years to toxic and, if left untreated, fatal levels. 😃 It was great to raise awareness of the condition and advocate for other patients when speaking with the knowledgeable Louise Taylor, as part of her “Taylor Talks” PodCast series. 🎬 In this clip, we discuss the importance of maintaining ferritin (a protein that stores iron) levels for haemochromatosis patients, requiring frequent venesections (bloodletting), to generally under 50 mcg per litre – which is what we “rusties” casually refer to as “maintenance”. What can you do? 👉 Check out the video. 👉 Speak to friends and family about the condition. 👉 Campaign for resource in national health, including voluntary and community based services. 👉 Talk to your local health professional if you want to know more or think you may have symptoms of the genetic disease! #Haemochromatosis #CelticCurse #Health #Advocacy #Policy #Scotland

Strategic Design Director at Manyone | Digital Strategy, Strategic Foresight & Design Thinking | Digital Health
One of the most powerful and inspiring podcasts I've listened to so far in 2024 with the extremely bright Casey Means, MD on metabolic health and chronic disease prevention. 🤩 A few reflections I want to share: Just imagine the potential in redirecting the focus of our healthcare system and personal health efforts from treating downstream symptoms to actually driving chronic disease prevention by double clicking on metabolic dysfunction and how we can leverage nutrition, exercise and environmental factors to enhance our metabolic health by improving mitochondrial function, hormone and blood sugar regulation. I know this is super nerdy, but there's actually a lot we can do ourselves, easily, and low cost, which can positively affect our health span and longevity. Change like this will of course require change on many systemic levels though, far out of reach for a strategist and designer like me, but I wonder what the future could look like if e.g. major global pharma or insurance companies created new ventures and strategic partnerships and took up prevention to drive change on root cause levels and put pressure on the political, financial, and even legal and regulatory structures that push for maintaining status quo? This podcast really sheds some great insights regarding Wegovy and Ozempic. However, there are a few other things to consider here. As a Zepbound patient myself, (Wegovy adjacent), the other option would be a much more invasive bariatric surgery. Wegovy and Zepbound offer a much safer long term weight loss and sustainability versus a patient going under the knife and being exposed to secondary infections and mortality rates (https://lnkd.in/e_9MJjgW). Sure, the glutide revolution isn't perfect, but it is a viable option for patients who do not wish to go through bariatric surgery.
On the surface, it would seem that Wegovy and Ozempic are miracle drugs. You take them and you lose weight. But alas, it’s not so simple. For consumers, there are potentially significant side effects to consider while for health plans the costs can be rather astronomical. In the latest edition of the Empowering Plans podcast, "Weighing the Options," Phia’s attorneys Ron E. Peck and Corey Crigger discuss the impact this surge in demand has had on health plans and consumers.

🗣 Here is a myth many of my patients believe: "People in my family are overweight, so there's nothing I can do." 🧬 Although genetics do play a role in your body composition and metabolism, genes are not destiny. They're just one piece of a complex puzzle that also includes your diet, physical activity, stress levels, and sleep patterns. 🗝 It is your actions, attitudes, and choices that hold the key to a healthier lifestyle. ✅ Fueling your body with quality, nutritious food helps you manage your weight, regardless of genetics. ✅ Staying physically active helps you burn calories and build muscle, both of which support healthy weight management. ✅ Adequate sleep and stress management can regulate the hormones that influence hunger and fat storage, impacting weight loss. Stay tuned for more myth-busting insights and empowering health advice. ➡️ Follow me on social media, and check out my podcast!

Improving Metabolic Flexibility On my podcast, I’ve covered the importance of metabolic flexibility for long-term health. This refers to your body’s ability to readily switch between burning carbs or fat for fuel. Problems arise when we become too reliant on a constant stream of carbohydrates. If you get shaky or drop blood sugar after just 4-5 hours without eating, your metabolism has adapted to depend on frequent feedings. You aren’t burning stored fat efficiently between meals. However, we can train the body to access adipose fat stores through gradual fasting intervals. At first, you may only make it a little longer before getting hungry as the body protests burning fat. But consistently stretching feeding windows allows your cells to relearn how to draw on your body’s abundant energy reserves. Over time, symptoms dissipate as metabolic flexibility improves. Tune into my next episode to learn how small feats like pushing breakfast back an hour or limiting nighttime snacks can have big impacts on metabolic health over time. I’ll explain how to progressively improve flexibility without shocking your system.

The word 'celebrities' brings up different feelings for me. But it's true that people like Michael J Fox, Selma Blair, and Christina Applegate are celebrities. My goal? To work with one of them. It's a big dream, but I have a good reason for it. I believe partnering with a celebrity could help my upcoming documentary series, "Pursuit of a Cure", reach people worldwide. This series wants to help people understand health, wellness, and illness better. When my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in the early 2000s, and my dad had a brain abscess, we got a lot of different advice from different experts. This made us wonder - how do you know what's true? Who can you trust and why? Where do you start? The first step is to talk to experts and compare what they say with what other professionals think. But this isn't something you can do on your own. Trying to find a cure for my mom was hard. We went everywhere, even to Mexico. We ended up in a clinical trial that gave us hope, and some of the things they found out are still being used today. We were lucky that my mom got into that trial. But not everyone is as lucky. We want to change that. We want to shine a light on these trials and how they can save lives. But we can't do this alone. We need help to spread this information as far and wide as possible. So, if you know Selma, Christina, or Michael, or anyone else who could help, let's talk. Your ideas could be very important. -------------- Hi, I’m Justine Reichman, your friendly neighborhood, Founder & CEO of NextGen Purpose and Host of the Essential Ingredients Podcast Our mission is to boost driven, forward-thinking folks & and initiatives in the regenerative food scene.
