I had the opportunity to speak before the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners this week in support of our strategic partner, Hillsborough County Public Schools. If you know me, you know I was immediately off-script, but below I will share *roughly* what I said to the commissioners as they considered how they might structure revenue distribution for the community investment tax renewal. Let me know what you think: Thank you chair, and commissioners for the opportunity to address you today. I rise to speak in support of keeping Hillsborough County Schools funding in the CIT tax. Though my work is in food security, my masters degree is in education policy and I am the husband and son of teachers. You have heard the numbers, the talking points, and the pleas of citizens to support investment in our schools and I will not rehash them for you. I speak today as a #strategist, as someone who wants to see our community thrive, see our neighbors earn stable, living wages, and not depend on the food relief system to put meals on family tables. It is from that perspective that I urge the commission to keep school funding in CIT. You may ask why not just one, but two employees (Lorena Hardwick) of a nonprofit that fights food insecurity would speak to you on this issue. It’s a good question with an important answer. What we know at Feeding Tampa Bay is that education is foundational to individual prosperity, and to a thriving community. Yes, our 40 on-campus pantries in Hillsborough County schools distribute food, but fundamentally they are a strategy focused on student success. Though we are addressing the issue of hunger today, we work toward a world in which our neighbors have the ability and opportunity to procure their own food. Removing education from the CIT tax would be a step back from that goal, not a step toward it. Thank you for your time today and for the opportunity to advocate for brighter futures for the children of Hillsborough County. 3 minutes isn’t a lot of time, but that was my/our message. It’s who we are at Feding Tampa Bay. Nothing would make us happier than living in a community where food insecurity did not.

Literacy is one of our three primary pillars. We’re doing what we can to move the needle little by little to help children in need get the resources and support they need to read at their grade level. Thanks to a generous contribution from RSM last fall, we’re continuing to build on that. https://rsm.us/3t5hqmv

Virginia has billions of reasons to celebrate NASPL’s Lottery Week! Over 12 billion reasons, if we’re being specific 😉. This week, we are joining lotteries across North America in celebrating Lottery Week, July 15 – 19, 2024. Lottery Week is an initiative organized by the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries (NASPL). It’s dedicated to showing how citizens benefit from lotteries in their states. As you may know, 100% of Virginia Lottery profits go to public education, including more than $12 BILLION for K-12 public education since 1999! Every school district in Virginia benefits from the Lottery through programs like early reading intervention, textbooks, class size reduction and more. But its bigger than just us - there are 48 lotteries in the United States: 45 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Each with a specific designated beneficiary. Some states use their lottery profits for things like tax relief, parks and recreation or veterans’ programs. The majority of states use their lotteries, like Virginia, to benefit education. “All of us take pride in our mission of contributing to Virginia’s future, one play at a time," said Virginia Lottery Executive Director Khalid Jones.
