Ever wondered what it would be like to be a student at the University of Oxford? Well, that’s exactly the experience we will give 100 of our young people from underrepresented backgrounds tonight, as we take them to Oxford for an overnight residential stay. Students will stay in halls, attend taster lectures, network with current students, and fully immerse themselves in the Oxford University experience. This is part of our long-term partnership with Wadham College. But this residential is more than just a visit; it’s a life-changing opportunity. By walking, living, and sleeping in these historic halls, our young people will see their dreams as tangible and achievable. Statistics show that students who engage in university environments are significantly more likely to pursue higher education. A degree, particularly from a prestigious university, continues to be a significant factor in long-term prosperity. It has the power to break the cycle of poverty. Our thanks to Wadham College for their generous support in making this possible. This reflects our joint efforts towards increasing social mobility and empowering underrepresented young people to believe that they, too, belong in places like this. #EducateEngageEmpower #AccessForAll #FutureLeadersUK #WadhamCollege #SocialMobility

Fraternities Are a Cure for What Ails Higher Education “Universities benefit from the values instilled in fraternity men. Administrators are increasingly worried about student retention, especially in a post-Covid environment. Many studies have shown that Greeks, strengthened by the bonds they’ve made with friends and grounded by the structures of their organizations, are more likely to stay in school and graduate.” Click the image below to read the full article by Dr. Dawn Watkins Wiese, FRMT, Ltd. Shame on the University of Nottingham for resorting to legal action against its students rather than opening channels of communication and trying to address legitimate concerns regarding its unethical research collaborations, which have potentially contributed to the genocide in Gaza. When students engage in critical thinking and human rights activism, values which the university claims to support, it attempts to silence them through legal means rather than upholding its professed values. As a family of alumni of the University of Nottingham, myself, my husband, and my two graduate children, we can no longer endorse an institution with pro-Zionist tendencies. Actions speak louder than words. Part 2 of my contribution today on UoN Compus, speaking as one of the UoN alumni.

From article: "CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - The Charleston County School Board voted to approve an honors African American Studies course following the state’s decision to remove it. The Charleston County School District’s Board of Trustees voted Thursday to approve the locally designed African American Studies Elective Course. The curriculum would be structured as an honors course and would count as one of students’ elective credits. In June, the state Department of Education decided to leave AP African American Studies off its 2024-2025 school year course roster, meaning students will not be able to receive college credit for the course like with other Advanced Placement courses. The decision came after two years of South Carolina offering AP African American Studies in some public schools as a pilot program. The agency said the reason for its removal was because of the controversy surrounding the course. The state’s Department of Education did leave it up to individual districts to offer the course at an honors level, which is the one below AP." https://lnkd.in/gcGCFWqd #socialstudies #curriculum #APAfricanAmericanStudies #southcarolina
