Had a great time presenting my paper "Comparing Capital Allocation Efficiency in Public and Private Equity Markets" and having great discussions at the International Monetary Fund. Thank you Bruno Albuquerque for organizing the seminar. In our paper, Ioannis Spyridopoulos and I evaluate capital allocation efficiency in public and private equity markets in the US. Traditionally, most of equity financing was raised through public equity offerings in the stock markets. In recent years, however, private equity markets have grown significantly, supplying more capital to private firms in the form of late-stage financing than IPOs and SEOs combined. We find that public markets allocate financial capital substantially more efficiently than private markets due to better information efficiency and governance mechanisms. A dollar of equity allocated through public markets generates at least two times more revenue and patent applications than a dollar allocated to comparable firms in private markets. Every year, the "Proxy Preview" is published which gives an idea to investors and issuers as to what to expect for the coming proxy season... This year, the section given over to pass-through voting is larger than before... Although not yet mainstream (mainly due to time taken by asset owners who put careful consideration into how to utilise pass-through voting), the blog starts to make clear that issuers should consider who to engage with and how to communicate with the investor who is casting the vote. "Furthermore, pass-through voting could also create a need for – yet not provide a vehicle for – direct engagement between companies and upstream clients with specific goals." Early innings - and Tumelo has some great ideas for a solution to this problem! https://lnkd.in/er2E9wDp
